Please find more information about these incredible teams below. As we move forward with our Celebration of Innovators event as well as our Innovation camp we will make sure to keep you all informed.

Second Annual Innovate Salone Competition Chooses 5 Finalists Out of 100+ Applications
The President and Board of Global Minimum Inc. are proud to announce the five finalists for the Innovate Salone 2013: “A De Mek Am” competition for secondary school students in Sierra Leone (SL).
As a continuation of last year’s successful innovation competition, we are pleased to announce that more than 400 students contributed to over 100 applications from all over SL, all proposing to solve tangible problems in their communities. The applications demonstrated passion and drive that make us very excited about the future of SL.
Below are the finalist schools, with their associated city and project title. Each finalist team will receive up to $1,500 to build a prototype of their solution. They will also be exposed to a network of mentors at top universities in the USA such as Harvard and MIT. All finalists are expected to participate in an upcoming awards ceremony on June 22nd, and a 3-day hands-on innovation camp in August. Congratulations to our finalists!
Finalists -- Innovate Salone 2013
1. School: The Annie Walsh Memorial School (Freetown)
Project: Electric Hoist System
Category: Engineering
Description: Due to the high levels of deforestation within the Freetown peninsula, water levels have been decreasing at a steady rate. In order to access fresh drinking water, wells are being dug deeper and more frequently. The team from The Annie Walsh Memorial School is looking to create an easy and scalable way for anyone to have access to water at the bottom of wells through the development and creation of an electric hoist system using locally available materials.
2. School: The Awada School (Bo)
Project: Energy Around a Simple Circuit
Category: Energy
Description: The students from The Awada School hope to find the best way to create torches out of scrap metal that can be readily found in surrounding communities. The goal of this would be to find a cost effective and easy way to make light available to as many people as possible.
3. School: Prince of Wales School (Freetown)
Project: Manually Operated Grinding Machine
Category: Engineering
Description: The students from the Prince of Wales School in Freetown will be working on the design and production of manually operated grinding machines to promote the ease and safety of maintaining various tools including knives, cutlasses, and hoes, in communities around Sierra Leone.
4. School: Kabala Senior Secondary School (Kabala)
Project: Raising Health and Sanitation Awareness Project
Category: Health and Sanitation
Description: The lack of access to clean water is the common cause for sickness such as cholera. In order to minimize diseases caused by unsafe water, students from Kabala Senior Secondary School are aiming to repair broken wells while treating the water with chlorine. Their end goal is to increase community sanitation.
5. School: Prince of Wales Senior Secondary School (Freetown)
Project: Windmill Powered Laboratory
Category: Energy
Description: The students of Prince of Wales Senior Secondary School are looking to harness the power of wind to supply a consistent and reliable stream of energy to power their school’s physics laboratory. Drawing from electromagnetism and wind technology the team additionally hopes to create rechargeable batteries that can be charged using low-cost high powered windmills.
