By KABS KANU : A very important meeting on Sierra Leone was held in the ... AND HER SISTER PATRICIA OMO THORPE OF THE SAVE SIERRA LEONE FOUNDATION Dr.
Thank you Minister Kanu for forwarding this,
It was indeed an honor and a privilege for me to be seated at the high table where such important decisions are tested out and made. Not only am I proud of Dr. Thorpe as the NEC but doubly proud that she is my sister. Questions from the United Nations Ambassadors which included representatives from all the UN body (to name a few-; Interpol, Netherlands, Croatia, People Republic of Korea, Colombia, Moroccan Union, Uruguay, Australia, Japan, Nigeria, Liberia, Guinea, Ireland, Chile, Brazil, Austria, Pakistan, Germany, France, El
Salvador, United States, Britain, Turkey Spain, South Africa, United Federation States and many other countries) covered all areas of the electoral process. Many of us would not understand and appreciate the immense responsibility of this process especially when the stakeholders have a literacy band of 70/30. Educating the whole nation starts from village to village, towns, cities, islands, mosques, churches, places of worship, from the Okada boys to academicians’, it is intense and extensive and totally inclusive of all. The goal is to get everyone involved.
I have been fortunate to make some of these training visits with her and have therefore seen Sierra Leone at its worst and its best, there is no doubt we all have a lot of work to do. I am grateful that the international world has such tremendous respect for Dr. Thorpe and as a family we pray every day that she will deliver. It was loudly resounded that the result of this election will be a model for Africa and the world. Even advanced countries are amazed at the rate and extent she has gone to involve civic society and her empowerment of local chiefs, paramount chiefs, the youths and the women’s group all vital stake holders in this
process.
Dr. Thorpe yesterday asked the international world to continue their support and she outlined the challenges and needs for a successful process. It moved many when she said “we have nothing to hide and I on behalf of the people of Sierra Leone invite you all to monitor and observe the whole process until and beyond the final results”. It is good to know that the whole world will be watching us. For those intending to instigate fear and violent let this be a warning there are strategies in place and help from the United Nations to stop it at all cost.
She put out strong emphasis against politicians meaning to use the “okada boys” and the “youths” in a negative light, right now they are being trained to positively use their numbers and connections to educate others for a peaceful and non-violent election during their course of duty. I assured the United Nations body of Ambassadors that the forum groups, the individual groups, alumni association and group association in the Diaspora will forward the message of peace and will put out strong messages to all Sierra Leoneans to go to the polls and vote peacefully. I informed them of the group Sierra Leone Policy Watch who might even attempt to put some strategies in place for the “okada boys” mostly excumbatants, with little education and powerful tolls like their motorbikes and the fact that they have been trained to
use arms, of course they are the major stake holders and they need to understand that a positive role will be more beneficial to them as voters than negative incitement.
Dr. Thorpe also informed the UN that those individuals whose records were not captured by the biometric machines will be given the chance to re- register and vote a total of 900 registrants. The conference was done via video conferencing which means that the police and major stakeholders in Sierra Leone were in on the conference. All questions were answered and Minister Kanu I am sure has given more details below.
