**We have a lot of local vegetables and fruit available at the
markets, but protein is another story. Tomorrow Island Thyme will
have Spicy Italian, Kielbasa and Apple Breakfast Sausage available at
Parker School Market, as well as demi glace (try some in turkey gravy)
and for the first time they will have ground veal and veal stew meat
available for sale. Ground is $6 per pound, stew meat is $7 per pound.
**Waimea families and community friends can participate in Waimea
Middle School’s annual Thanksgiving Imu to help underwrite the annual
8th Grade East Coast educational trip in May 2010.
There is a $20 per pan donation requested and families may bring one
or several pans to be cooked in the traditional underground oven,
which will be created and managed by students with the guidance and
help of their families. Tickets may be purchased ahead of time from
any of the East Coast Tripper students or family members, or by
emailing the project’s teacher-advisor
(
Eunice_...@notes.k12.hi.us), stopping by the school office or
calling Patti Cook (937-2833). Hmmmm, how about taro, sweet potato,
beets, with a turkey tucked in between these beauties?
**Do you have a favorite place or two--not on fenced or obviously
private land--where you know you can gather edibles for free? Let us
know what you like to pick and we'll spread the word and perhaps
inspire others to eat really, really, locally. I'll go first:
although we have both an avocado and mac nut tree in our yard, I know
where to find ripe avos in my neighborhood most of the year, and know
where bigger mac nuts can be gathered easily. Pohas are close by for
the picking. On my morning walk I often pick a pipinola or two for
salads. Strawberry guava - easy; lilikoi - sadly not.
**Waimea Country Market is happening this Sunday.
