failure to send presence

I have a bot implemented which sends presence every time it comes up. It works most of the time however i have recently observed that it failed to send presence stanza to the server. However it sent other messages after start-up and those messages were delivered normally. Can there be a scenario like this ? What could be the possible reasons ?
