MathFest 2009 is a conference that will be held in Portland, OR on
August 6-8. That is of course quite a drive, not to mention housing
if you wanted to stay, but if anyone wanted to try and organize a
group, I might be interested. Registration is 50$ for students, and
unfortunately the math club will not be able to cover any costs on
this one.
Also, the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Jan 2010 is in San Francisco,
so we might be able to get school support over the fall, so if we
could start getting names as soon as possible for those interested, it
would help. I will of course remind people of this and more during
the fall semester as well.

I would also like to go to the Joint Math Meeting in January. It would be
really convenient (and quite possibly fun) if we could split a hotel
room/split hotel rooms.

as an SF-SJ commuter, i think these are your best
options:
1. carpool
travel time: 1-1.5 hrs one-way, depending on traffic
cost: $45 per day per car (assumes $30 parking)
park here: http://www.fifthandmission.com/home.htm
assuming at least 4 people per car, this may be your best
deal, and gives the greatest flexibility with arrival and
departure times.
2. caltrain and MUNI
travel time: 1.5 hrs one-way at commuter times, 2 hrs
one-way coming back late
cost: $15 per day per person
kind of a time sink, but you can do lots of stuff on the
train (alas, no wifi yet). biggest downside is that it's hard
to get to very early events, and tricky to stay late. btw,
caltrain to BART is slower and more expensive.
3. hotel
travel time: epsilon
cost: $160 per room through AMS; maybe $100 per room if
you go through priceline.com?
please consult an SF resident (e.g,. me) before you reserve
a non-AMS hotel room; you may not want to stay in a super-
"urban" neighborhood like, say, the tenderloin.
