to SJAA Announcements
Hello SJAA Members and Friends,

As you know, the mission of our organization, is to promote astronomy and related sciences to the public and among its members. And there are lots of ways to get involved beyond just attending meetings and star parties. Some of the ongoing opportunities are listed here:
http://www.sjaa.net/opportunities.shtml

I'd like to offer up a few specific and timely opportunities for you to get involved to help with the objective of the SJAA.  Please read through the details of these requests below and see if one is right for you. They may require a commitment, some more and some less, but here is what it takes: A level of excitement about what interests you mixed with a bit of willingness to share it with others, especially local kids.

If you have questions about any of these, please reach out to the contact person, visit the website (if listed) or feel free to ask me.

Here's a summary, full content below.
- Project ASTRO
- Science Day at Herman Intermediate School
- Citizens in Space/Space Hacking
- Grants from the City of San Jose

Thanks,
Rob Jaworski

Project ASTRO
from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP)

Show a child the universe and inspire the next generation of science
leaders!

ASP’s Project ASTRO Partners Volunteer Astronomers with Teachers in
Bay Area Schools & Community Organizations.

Project ASTRO is looking for amateur and professional astronomers to work with teachers and students in 3rd – 9th grade classrooms.  This is a great opportunity to share your love of astronomy with a receptive audience and help kids learn about science.

Bay Area Project ASTRO pairs you with a local teacher at a school convenient for you. Together, you and your teacher partner attend a 2-day summer workshop to learn hands-on, inquiry-based astronomy activities and then you "adopt" a class for a year.  Both partners will receive “The Universe at Your Fingertips 2.0” -- a rich curriculum resource on DVD-ROM featuring a host of materials on teaching astronomy you can use in many settings.

Astronomer applications are now being accepted for the 2013 - 2014 school year. There is no cost, but space is limited.  All participants are required to attend a 2-day workshop held August 2 & 3, 2013, at the San Mateo County Office of Education in Redwood City. Participants receive The Universe at Your Fingertips collection of activities and much more.

APPLY ONLINE by MAY 29th:

Graduate students and advanced undergraduate students majoring in astronomy are also encouraged to apply.

Science Day at Herman Intermediate School, San Jose

Herman Intermediate School will be hosting a science day on Thursday, May 23rd at Herman Intermediate School, located off of Blossom Hill Ave. and Hwy 85. From 8:30am until 2pm we will host the traveling space museum and exhibits from NASA. Our entire student body will travel through exhibits about space and technology. We were hoping that the San Jose Astronomy Association might want to run an exhibit at our event. It would be a 20 minute presentation done several times over the course of the day.

Citizens in Space, Silicon Valley Space Center

Citizens in Space and the Silicon Valley Space Center invite students and researchers on May 4th and 5th for a unique opportunity to meet space industry leaders and potentially secure a sponsored seat on the XCOR Lynx spacecraft by building and flying your cubelab payload experiment!

At our 2-day workshop in Mountain View, participants will enjoy presentations and meet leaders from space powerhouses like NASA and XCOR as well hands-on training with Arduino technologies and the Ardulab modules from Infinity Aerospace. Co-founders Manu Sharma and Brian Reiger will lead the training in software and hardware examples for microgravity experiments on the XCOR Lynx vehicle using the cublab form factor.

We will also feature hands-on exposure to a variety of other space programs, microcontrollers, sensors, imaging systems and other components for designing and building microgravity, fluid-physics, life-science and engineering experiments.

Student discounts (via "studentsinspace" discount code) and press passes are available.

Grants from the City of San Jose
Every so often, we are notified by the City of San Jose of funds available in the form of grants. It takes an application to be completed and submitted with a little bit of thinking behind it.  Grants allow the SJAA to do things like keep our Advanced Loaner Scope program fresh, expanding the ever-popular QuickSTARt program, and pay for things like insurance at public events and even refreshments at meetings.  If you have grant writing experience, or even just want to test the waters with fundraising, this is a great way to start. Contact me, Rob Jaworski, if you would like to get started with an available grant right away, or just discuss possibilities.
