Hi,

My talk at the meetup this evening is titled 'Money, Sex and Evolution
- simulation and data analysis with Ruby and R'.

The talk's not about the usual how-to stuff or even sharing of tools
and experiences. I'm going to talk abt how I used simulations written
with Ruby to figure out things around us. I won't be showing code
(unless you ask for it specifically, after the talk) and I wouldn't
talk abt implementation either so this is good for both beginners as
well as more advanced programmers.

Drop in if you're free!

Yay! I'll talk a little about using redis with rails after yours. Also, my little 3 months adventure at the bay area.

Aww shucks I just left SG two days ago so won't be able to catch both your talks and Jason's. :-(

for anyone who may be interested to find out more about Redis or try
it out, here's a link to an interactive Redis tutorial in the browser:

Thanks Mingding!

Also for a quick primer, read

Thanks Sau Sheong for the talk. Do stay tune for his upcoming Everyday Programming book.

Forgot to mention this yesterday - Thanks Subh for organizing the meet up!

Hi guys,

I'm new into ruby. Cloned your github project and tried to run the
first simulation, but got an error:

Andras:~ andras$ cd projects/everyday/Chapter\ 7\ -\ Money\,\ sex\
and\ evolution/money/
Andras:money andras$ ruby utopia.rb
utopia.rb:3:in `require': no such file to load -- enc/trans/transdb (LoadError)
from utopia.rb:3
Andras:money andras$ ruby -v
ruby 1.8.7 (2010-01-10 patchlevel 249) [universal-darwin11.0]

It seems like a missing package. Is it because I need a newer ruby?
How should I install the new ruby? With brew? (i'm on mac osx)

Thanks,
Andras

Hello Andras,
I strongly recommend rvm (http://beginrescueend.com/rvm/install/) it's simple to install and will allow you to have multiple rubies and gemset on your mac.

Enjoy!

Hi Anras,

You are right, you need to use Ruby 1.9. Forgot to mention it
yesterday. You should install RVM as Daniel suggested, makes life
easier for u :)

Thanks for sharing!

(Damn.. missed such an interesting talk.. ><.. reminds me of a module I took in NUS called 'Complexity', which was about emergent behaviour [but not using Ruby!])

This is a good simple article on redis and its use cases with rails.
