Hi guys

Next week will be the first week of November which means SRB meetup
time!

Anybody interested to give a presentation? Choonkeat --> loginsane?

Doh! I'm only going to be back in SG during the 2nd week of November, so I guess I'll miss this again. :-(

I could do a presentation/open discussion on plugins and gems you
should be using?

Share some best practise?

I'm not really the person to ask (given my limited rails work
recently) but perhaps a short BDD demo might also be good...

I don't suppose there's any chance of postponing the meetup to the 2nd week of November so that I can catch it for the first time? ;-)

Also, any chance anyone is heading to RubyEnRails in Amsterdam this weekend?

James

From my calendars, the 2nd week of the month looks empty of any clashing events so it's possible for us to have it then. Is anybody against having the meetup on the 2nd wed of November?

I think I can give a presentation on "BDD with Cucumber - the good, the bad and the ugly".

Hi Jason,

11 Nov is perfect for me. Thanks for pushing it back!

I'll be in Amsterdam for RubyEnRails this weekend, so perhaps I can
share a bit of what I've learned there during the meet up.

Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Hi Jason,

Arun just pinged me about this.

Well, we'd love to have you guys over once again but unfortunately we don't have a projector now. The old one died and we haven't got a replacement yet.

Let me know if you wanna bring in a projector to the Wego office, if not maybe we can try SMU?

Hi guys

If we can't get a projector nor an alternative venue, we could try getting everyone on the same network and speakers preso on a screen session in terminal while audience ssh + screen attach on their laptop? Those that didn't bring laptop will just turn to his/her neighbour and ask "Would you be so kind to share?" What ya think?

Hey guys,

Just FYI, there won't be wifi available at Wego, and even if we do set a temporary one up for the meetup, it'll be hit or miss from the 3rd floor where things are happening.

Will ad hoc networking work?

Hey Ronnie

Any 802.11* will suffice. Thanks! :)

Ad-hoc networks (those blasted from laptops) got some issues with certain Linux powered wireless receivers unable to connect to the network so it would be awesome if we have wifi for a lan network.

Andy ya comfy with this setup for yr preso?

I thought the "Plugins, gems & best practices discussion" is a go-
round-the-table discussion? I suggest using the format from this post
http://rubyflow.com/items/2865

The categories are
-Hardware
-Software
-Hosting

Maybe we can add more
-gems that you use(for authentication, testing, blah)
-the ide(editors, shells, blah)

Everyone can chip in during the meetup. Or maybe discuss it as a email
thread? Then choon keat has more time for his gem?

What do u guys think?

blah is darcs.net in my case ;)
i can share my experience from ~1.5yrs ago and i can compare it to git
and svn too.

there is a quite extensive and real world example based comparision on
distributed revision control systems here:
http://hackage.haskell.org/trac/ghc/wiki/DarcsEvaluation
BUT it's outdated, since darcs development continued afterwards and
the problems are fixed now.

i read the whole thread and despite of that fact that the authors
concluded that - at that time - git is the way to go, i still think
the examples in the article show very nicely how much simpler,
elegant, convenient is darcs and how pityful is the naming and the
procedures of the other systems.

can we focus on version control. the best practices categories are too
broad. its unlikely we can finish in one session. i'd suggest that as
an email thread if anybody is interested.

version control workflows
-darcs by tamas
-git workflow by ??
-mercurial anyone?

Hi there,

I talked about the research on some software engineering myths with
actual empirical data.

I wrote a brief summary of what it is at my blog:
http://www.justinlee.sg/2009/10/12/software-engineering-empirical-discoveries/

If you want the direct link, go here:
Exploding Software-Engineering Myths -
http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/news/features/nagappan-100609.aspx

There are various other links to Nagappan's research papers in that
news article regarding all these interesting findings. What I'm
impressed is that they have actual numbers to show.

Cheers!
