Hi guys
It's nearing the first Wednesday of next month. Does anybody have topics to share? I know Zan can give a talk on cross-stub gem.
Some of the SRB folks mentioned on twittersphere about the clash in schedule with WebSG meetup. If there's not enough momentum for a SRG August meetup we might be crashing the WebSG party. :P

In the recent rubyconf china, a guy from yottaa.com spoke abt mongodb,
and why his company chose mongodb over other solutions, i find it a
very good intro for me, the slides are available at

There are a few things you should know about MongoDB before using it:

These things aren't new -- they're just hidden in their official docs. Amidst all the cool stuff Mongo provides you, you tend to overlook these limitations.
Btw I can do a talk on redis/resque if there's interest. I just did a major deployment at work 2 weeks ago and it's been running great (doing around 3 million jobs/day without breaking a sweat!) after initial hiccups. I also wrote a bunch of resque plugins to do some things differently.

Just to clarify - it's only Andy doing the speaking and he's speaking about running a freelance web business and not Gameplan per se. Hope to see you guys tomorrow at WebSG!

2 months prior, i developed (for proof purposes) a world cup site
@thecup.sidlr.com

on ruby side of things
- was built on mongodb (thru mongomapper) storing both match details
and data updates
- using monkrb which is a fabulous sinatra-based ruby framework
- memcached n working directly on the rack middleware
- cloudhosted on heroku/mongodb --- what isnt?
though i've been playing with Ruby way before Rails, this was first
time i went elbow-deep into ruby greasing
so I just wanna say
Ruby != Rails and Ruby > Rails

I've not been using Rails seriously since 1.2.6, have been using
Sinatra + Sequel/DataMapper + Haml for a long time now, even written a
book on it. Rails is great but it's not the solution for everything.
My stack fits me comfortably and I enjoy using it. Glad u enjoyed ur
stack too :)

actually doing Sinatra is much more old skool (you pre-Rails guys know what i mean)
and it forces you to really read every darn line of script
much closer to the rack middleware
it took me < 1 day to read and half-understand the entire Sinatra mechanism
Rails I feel definitely still is best-breed for apps
* that need lots of visuals/bling
* over large # of pages, usually data
* relational tables, lots of CRUD
* need lot of standard features - facebook, e-mail, captcha etc... where plugins make sense
(okay you Rails fanboys fill in the rest)
fortunately for me, i never ever like to do these type of apps

My current preferred ruby framework is http://padrinorb.com which is
built on top of Sinatra with additional features similar to Rails.
It also has an admin generator like Django. As for plugins I think
the shift is moving towards rack middleware which is more agonistic
and faster. Check out http://coderack.org/ for the list of available
middleware.
