herm, not a fan of splitting the conversation across many channels without
open reconciliation. So now we have a google group, meetup, and facebook.
whatever, I'll follow the community whereever..

I'm for sticking with the Google Groups for ongoing conversations, and Meetup for the meetup announcements. Not really in favor of the Facebook Group, not sure how that'll give more to us than what we already have. But I'll go with the community if that's what everyone thinks is best.

I too has resisted the idea of FB group til I saw those lively activities
from the other user groups on FB. Let's give it a shot. If it doesn't work
we can close it or maybe the next wave of ruby folks would enjoy the
discussions on FB better.

I struggle to work out which of Google Groups or Facebook I dislike more...
The meetup thing, I paid for from the conference profit, to have a more active platform to reach out and poke everyone when we're having a meet up. That was my only intention.
I feel like meetup has its issues as well... The commenting and discussions (even the image resizing) are pretty crappy.: someone could build an open source 'meetup' management service. There's a nice little project for someone :-)

btw Andy - thanks for funding meetup from the conference takings. I now
find I'm in 4 meetup groups in Singapore, and I can start to see it work
quite well. The discussions/mailing list aspect is the one part that is
only now just starting to fire.
I think we just see for a bit how this all shakes out.
But it's interesting that we are discussing all this in the google group;-)
And I shudder a little when imagining a future where this all takes place
in Facebook. OK perhaps if you are a .net user group .. but not for the
kind of ruby folks I know;-)

I'm just an outsider, but here's my take on all this...
Discussion is the life blood of a virtual group, and as such its home should be very carefully chosen.
Meetup's discussion features are limited, and are IMO inadequate for an active technical group.
Facebook reminds me of the time I was in a tiger park in Chiang Mai
(photo at http://www.bbs-software.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/tiger-kin...).
Sure, you can hang out with a tiger from time to time, but who's to tell when it's
going to turn on you? At the heart of it, I guess I don't trust Facebook.
I like being able to read and reply to the messages via email, where I have
a plethora of client applications from which to choose. Heck, there's probably a way to
read Google Group messages on a text only terminal. (There are definitely text mode
nntp readers, but I think most Google Groups these days are not Usenet groups,
to avoid spam.)
Google is a behemoth enterprise like Facebook, but I feel they're more conscientious and trustworthy than Facebook.
I realize that some of these opinions are subjective, based on feelings rather than thorough objective examination, but my preference is Google Groups.

I'm unexcited about moving this discussion to facebook, I don't like
that people can invite me to facebook groups willy-nilly and I
suddenly start getting a mess of facebook email. I can probably find a
setting to turn that off, but I haven't bothered.

I don't think discussions would be livelier on FB than on Google now. It is
like my todo applications: All of them are adequate, and they are as useful
as the information I put in :)
If there is a feature that we are missing that is offered by FB, then it's
good. If not, then it won't make a difference.
I have my FB notification emails switched off. Since my primary method of
consumption of the RB list is by emails, I will probably miss out on many
of the topics.

I would like to share my observations about the usage of FB groups versus google groups for online tech communities
HackerspaceSG has an google group and facebook group. Both groups are actively used and it seems that discussions on both are quite different and by different groups of people.
Python Users have a google group which is quiet now and have 2 active FB groups: Singapore Python Users Group and Singapore Python Platoon.
iOS Dev scout has a google group which is quiet now and has an active FB group too.
There probably isn't a one size fits all solution as of yet. Why not have both facebook and google groups and let them grow organically?

I'm looking for talented ROR developers to hire for in-house work. So do drop me a line if anyone is interested in meeting up for a chat ! Or if anyone wants to chat about this.
I would think that Facebook would draw more friendly eye-balls and thus awareness, whereas Meetup purely manages the events nicely. Google Groups is good for geeky discussions... Pretty much like a 3-circle Venn diagram, pretty tough to get a perfect tool.
