I know this is über old, but there may be someone else out there with this problem,

Two Things:

>> You are getting the smtp error because you haven't setup the smtp settings for the groupware or for the user you have selected.

Hence the method of sending notifications was incorrect... and I also imagine the settings for the smtp were not done correctly.
