Hi all,

Based on your experience, how is the market condition in Australia? Is
Australia a viable market for technology startup company? With only 20
millions people in Australia, how is the technology acceptance here
compared to countries in North Americe or Europe?

Thank you very much sharing.

Joshua,
There are a lot of viable startups in Australia. There are some
that have even managed to stay and grow there :) I would say that if
the business lends itself to internet and word of mouth marketing like
a SaaS business (e.g. Atlassian) then you've got a good chance of
staying there. However, if your business needs a direct sales model
(like 90% of businesses) then you're probably going to move out of
Australia at some point. It's just simple math, Australia is 20M
people, US for instance is 300M people. Unless your natural market
growth is into Asia at which point Australia or Singapore is a natural
home for operations.

The other thing that might force you out early is if the talent you
need exceeds Australia's intellectual capital, but this is rarely a
case. Australia is teeming with amazing talent looking for great
opportunities.

There is limited access to capital in Australia as well (which is part
of the point of this whole mailing list).

But Australia is definitely one of the best places in the world to
live.

Good luck.
Patrick.

Just a point of clarification: Atlassian's customers were never in
Australia and never made up more than a miniscule percentage. There is
no reason why you can't be in Australia and sell to overseas customers
but targeting Australian customers would need a huge mainstream need
(e.g. Accounting) otherwise you would be pushing the proverbial shit
up a hill.
