Maybe I didn't read enough details but doesn't that mean the NSW gov
are sponsoring us to move overseas to create US companies rather that
providing subsidies for desks at somewhere like fishburners where the
companies are staying local?

I can understand commercialisation assistance, which it already gives.
I can understand support for sales offices. But to support the
starting of a company in another country doesn't make a lot of sense.
That's employment, tax, IP all being in US, not AU. You might come
home but not after 90% of the economic benefit has gone to the US
economy. Seems a really indirect way to boost the Australian industry.
Especially when there doesn't seem to any program locally for rent
assistance for startups.

You're right, I'm over reacting. It's not a big subsidy.
However I'm still not sure I buy the idea that it's good to support
companies being founded overseas as opposed to sales support overseas.
I don't know anything about the Radiata story but perhaps contrast
Business Catalyst with Atlassian. The GoodBarry/business catalyst guys
were very active in the community providing support and advice locally
in Sydney. They relcoated to the US, sold to Adobe, haven't seen them
again. That's not to say that they haven't reinvested that money or
expertise locally. Maybe I haven't heard about it. Atlassian on the
other hand do continue to provide sponsorship, facilities and
inspiration to the local community.

What I've observed in successful tech industries overseas is the other
way around.
As in it's actually the Industries that invite their Govt people along.
If thats what's happening here I'm ok with that. Its normal.
There are other markets to sell to. It's tough selling into the US and
not being bought up.
Challenge will be to build a head of steam and not have everything
sold off including the shoes.
If all we are to be judged on is businesses sold off to the
competition (we are regarded as competition in the States, lets be
honest) then its not going to be like other countries industries which
focus on moving widgets to the customer.
The GoodBarry/business catalyst guys were very active in the community providing support and advice locally in Sydney. They relcoated to the US, sold to Adobe, haven't seen them again. That's not to say that they haven't reinvested that money or expertise locally. Maybe I haven't heard about it.
What is startup hose and how to use it?
I think you misunderstand me. I'm not saying going to the US is bad
for startups, or bad for "us" being startup community. It's obviously
good and the cross pacific knowledge transfer going on now is fantastic.
The goodbarry guys did take a risk and it did pay off for them and I
don't begrudge them that or expect anything from them, or any other
company that has succeeded. That wasn't what I was trying to say.
My point was only that the NSW government is about taking NSW tax
payers money and turning it into benefit for those living here,
employing people here and paying tax here. So even though I know you
guys will be there for me if I decide to go over, and I appreciate
that, I don't expect the Australian government to be helping me. Just
doesn't seem to make sense. I would have expected them to be enticing
entrepreneurs to come to Australia.
