Story Feature - Google Earth Outreach turns two years old

On a hot and humid New York morning in June 2007, a host of dedicated non profit organizations gathered at Google's New York office to launch with Google the Google Earth Outreach program, better enabling these passionate groups to tell their stories through geography.

During the past two years, Google Earth Outreach has continued to expand its role in working with the non profit community, by providing tools and features to help them develop and promote their fascinating content.

Some of the highlights of the last two years, have included.

Mapping with Google Spreadsheets, allowing content to be managed and collaborated on, producing a KML layer for people to explore the work done by different groups.
The launch of the Google Earth Outreach program in; the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy and Brazil. The highlight of which was this amazing presentation given at our UK launch by Sir David Attenborough
Working with different elements of the British government, notably the Met Office Hadley Centre and British Antarctic Survey to develop two high quality KML files titled Climate Change in our World
A small team of Outreach member's expedition to the Amazon rainforest to meet with Chief Almir Surui and the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT) to lead a series of workshops for members of his tribe.
Google Earth Outreach's continued role in providing training workshops for organizations who are passionate about being able to display their valuable work in Google Earth.

KML Feature - UNHCR Refugee Camps

June 20th 2009 marked World Refugee Day, which gave people an opportunity to join with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in showing solidarity with the millions of people who each year are forced to leave their homes.

" Marie is a Burundian refugee in Rwanda. As a member of the Tutsi ethnic group, she and her family were attacked by Hutu rebels on several occasions. Now she and her family are waiting to be resettled; as she says, "I plan to work and start over my life with my family. It’s the most precious dream I have… to see them again."

Together with Google, UNHCR is putting refugees on the map - a virtual map - with a new Google Earth tour that shows UNHCR's refugee camps across the globe. Claudia Gonzalez-Gisiger from UNHCR says the tour is a powerful way for everyone to get an insight into the desperate conditions in which refugees live. "
