Dear colleagues,

Northwestern University in Qatar (NU-Q) invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in Humanistic and Critical Approaches to Artificial Intelligence, based in the Communication Program, with the possibility of a joint appointment in the Liberal Arts Program.

We are seeking candidates whose research foregrounds humanistic perspectives on AI. Areas of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Critical, historical, or theoretical perspectives on AI

  • AI ethics and algorithmic accountability

  • Cultural manipulation and AI

  • Humanistic, interpretive, comparative, or transnational methodologies in AI research

  • Critical approaches to AI in media industries

  • AI’s intersections with sound, robotics, digital labor, and computation

Successful candidates should demonstrate a strong research record (commensurate with rank) or a promising trajectory for early-career scholars, alongside a commitment to inclusive teaching, mentoring, and institutional service. The teaching load is two courses per semester, including both disciplinary core courses and electives aligned with the candidate’s expertise. Faculty may also contribute to interdisciplinary minors such as AI and Media, Media and Politics, Strategic Communication, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, and Africana Studies.

NU-Q offers opportunities for collaboration with the Institute for Advanced Study of the Global South, the Artificial Intelligence and Media Lab, and the Media Majlis Museum. We are a diverse, globally embedded institution in Education City, with students from more than 60 countries.
