Good Afternoon,

In June, we will be supporting our first summer SI course.  I was wondering if you  have any ideas/suggestions for planning SI sessions  that reflect the shortened semester.  Do you offer more hours per week, select certain topics/strategies, run longer SI sessions?  Currently, we have decided to have two SILeaders for the course (large class roster and it is a Chem class with a lab).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello!

At Florida Atlantic University we support courses during the summer (fewer than we normally would during the fall/spring).  In planning the SI sessions I would recommend to keep the sessions around the course; one before on one day/one after on another (as the SI Model states).  But I would strongly recommend to not hold sessions on days when the class is not being offered as students will not come back to campus during the summer just for a session. For a large Chemistry course, if the class is early morning (9ish), and there is not a class in the room right beforehand, try to hold it in the same location.  You will have a greater opportunity of students showing up for it and then the class will flow into it right after.  Additionally, if you are able to hold sessions around the lab times, that would be good too!

Lastly, if you are able to do so, I would recommend to hold some tutoring hours for the course as that will be another outlet for students to receive assistance.  I hope this information is helpful to you.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us!

Have a great day!
