Good Afternoon!
I vaguely remember something about UMKC certifying SI Trainers. Does anyone have any information about this? Any idea where I could find it? Several years ago our tutors and SI Leaders were certified through CRLA, but upon applying for recertification, we were informed that CRLA no longer certifies SI programs.
I attended the ATP (Association for Professional Tutoring) conference in March. They certify individuals, not programs. This could work, however it would mean submitting training documentation for every single SI Leader. Plus, they charge per person for certification.
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Keri,
Here’s the link for UMKC’s training: http://www.umkc.edu/asm/si/trainings.shtml. I know they offer supervisor training at UMKC several times a year, but I believe they can also come to your institution. Hope this helps!

Colleagues,
The International Center for Supplemental Instruction (SI) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) does indeed offer SI Supervisor Training Workshops nine times per year in Kansas City http://www.umkc.edu/asm/si/index.shtml and also offers on-site trainings on individual campuses (as Charlotte accurately stated below – thank you!). These two-day interactive workshops are intended to train those starting new SI programs, provide a refresher for those working in established programs, and/or assist those who are resuscitating struggling or defunct programs. Most of the attendees are individuals that are (or will be) running an SI program, but we also have administrators, faculty members, and even student SI leaders that attend the workshops. Training topics include: procedures for selecting SI courses and SI leaders; roles of supervisors and leaders; benefits, evaluation, and funding of the program; training and supervision of SI leaders; theoretical frameworks underlying the SI model; effective learning strategies; and SI session activities. Attendees also participate in SI simulations. In Kansas City, a third (optional) day is also offered for those that desire to learn more about how to train SI leaders. The on-site trainings can be tailored to the needs of the host campus, including the training of SI leaders, consultation with faculty members and/or high level administrators, etc.
Attendees of both the Kansas City and on-site workshops receive reproducible SI Supervisor and SI Leader manuals and a certificate of completion. The certificate indicates the participant completed the two-day SI Supervisor Training Workshop; the certificate does not mean that the individual is now certified to train others on the SI model, or on how to implement SI at other institutions. SI Certified Trainers are those that (a) are employed by UMKC and conduct the SI Supervisor Training Workshops in Kansas City and around the U.S.; or (b) run the National SI Centers in other countries with which UMKC has formal Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and conduct SI Supervisor trainings in their respective countries and regions. There are just over a dozen SI Certified Trainers (CTs) in the world.
Additionally, as much as we’d like to be able to do so, the International Center for SI does not certify SI programs – as we do not have the resources to stay current with the hundreds, if not thousands, of SI programs around the world. SI programs are constantly being launched, adapted, suspended, and even cut, due to changes in leadership and funding. We also do not certify SI leaders for the same reason, although if leaders complete an SI Supervisor or SI Leader training workshop hosted by UMKC (or one of our allies around the world), they do receive the same certificate of completion as other participants.
I hope this explanation helps clarify our definition of a “UMKC Certified SI Trainer.”
In addition to visiting our website, those interested in learning more about our Kansas City workshops can contact Deidra West (wes...@umkc.edu) at 816-235-1174; and those interested in bringing a UMKC Certified SI Trainer to their campus should contact Kate Gold (go...@umkc.ed) at 816-235-1179.
Warmest regards,
Marion
