I had a another look at Kino last night.
The first time I looked at it, I did not give it a honest look. (At
first glance, it looks a little chinksee.) It seems that every Linux
distribution comes with Kino. I was actually surprised at what it had
to offer.
I was misled by, a thread that stated it does not support chromakey.
I looked in the video filters, and low and behold was, blue and green
chromakey filters.
Although when I looked in the help menu, I could not find anything on
them. Can anybody point me in the right direction.

If you get Kino sorted make a video on using the transitions in Kino.
I can't get my head around how to do transitions in Kino

I see what you mean, it is confusing. At first glance, the program
seems user-friendly, but I always seemed to be switching from Windows
to window. It's that constant switching around that gets confusing.
Sometimes I forget where I'm at. You being a user of Ulead, I think
you know what I mean. Everything is in the same window.
Which makes it more user-friendly.

yes ulead seems to be very good at editing videos. I just wish some
programmers would get together and make a Linux version that works the
same way. even if they ported virtualdub as a starting point.

Have you tried out Kdenlive? I tried it the other day to do a little bit of titling work and it seemed much closer to something like Windows Movie Maker interface wise. I haven't really used it enough to do any real comparison with Kino, but it might be worth a look. (http://kdenlive.org).

Richard,

I was just playing with kdenlive a couple of days ago. I made a nice
intro to one of our raw screencasts (.ogg file) just for kicks. It
looked pretty nice in the preview but after I encoded it into xvid/mp3
the audio was all scratchy. Tried several times with the same outcome.
This was done on Ubuntu 8.04. Have you noticed this kind of behavior?
I think my version of kdenlive is 0.6svn straight from the repos.
Also, I reverted to ALSA instead of PulseAudio. Wonder if that has
anything to do with what had happened.

I'm not sure. But I know the last time I tried it was before I upgraded to Hardy Heron. I haven't tried since. I may try just that tonight. Maybe you could export the audio and video separately and patch them back together with mencoder if it's a persistent problem. The stuff I was doing had no audio so I'm not sure if it's a problem on my system or not.

Thanks Dia, for the link.
I haven't viewed any
yet. I've been pretty busy lately. But very much appreciated.

Hi Richard,
I've looked at Kdenlive, but I really
haven't had time to work with it yet. I just got done looking at
Kino, and it's not really what I'm looking for. On the Linux side of
the house, Cinelerra is looking the best. But I will give Kdenlive a
try. Right now, I'm trying out operating systems. I like VideoLinux,
but I can only get it to work on the live CD. When I installed it to
hard drives, I lost the GUI, and I got an error about Xorg. I'm a
newbie at Linux, so I'm not that savvy yet.

I think I know what your problem is with the MP3
file. You're taking an .ogg file. Which is already compressed, and
compressing it more, to an MP3. Try starting with a PCM wave.

I have setup instructions for Ubuntu in cinelerra if you need them.
No not got that far as rendering a video in kdelive. I did actually
produce my holiday videos in Ulead video studio yesterday.
It's just such a shame the Linux community can not produce a video
editor as easy and intuitive to use as the windows video editors.

Try other operating systems in a virtual machine:

Thanks again,
Next time I go to somebody's house with
DSL, I'll download them. At my home, I can only get dailup, and it
soooooo slow. The maximum height of my downloads are: 5kbs. Thats
Verizon for ya, if they can't make any money on you, they don't
upgrade.
I usually order Linux distributions through on-disk.com . Lastime I
had a customed disk made. (ArtistX)
People have been giving me their old computers when they buy a new
one. 90 percent of the time, it's a software problem.
Usually MS ___ doz. Hence why I have been looking for a operating
system.
What I would like to do is: enhance the computers for art. Then
donate them to a local youth organization.
