Just to add my experience on this subject : I found the PyScripter the best non commercial IDE. Has intellisense and debugging built-in. [link]
By far the best I have tried:
      *Free*
      Portable
      Ctrl+scroll moves fast around code!

From what I have experienced the larger the project the more need for
a heavy weight IDE. It saves you time and therefore the company money
when you need to quickly navigate through a large project. I last
project I was part of at work we had more than 500 source files using

I'm with both Kyran and Ian. I've used vim / gvim quite a bit for
Python development and it works great for programming, especially with
a Unix / Linux system.
I'm now in the beginning phases of a new and exciting project that
will have me doing more Python programming, so I recently bought a
copy Wing Pro and love it. All of it's features do seem a bit busy,

You may also take a look at [link] (I use it on ubuntu)
it's very fast, has autocompletion and code browser, but doesn't
support debugging.
somewhat reminds of notepad++.
For debugging I use [link] (seems like
bloated and lazy IDE),

Ian, I agree with you 100%. I was using Visual Studio for about 5 yrs
doing unit testing with C#.
When my job changed and didn't have studio I had to "re-learn vim"
again. Even now I need
to look-up a lot of vim magic. If you put a dollar value to it, if an

WingIDE handles most language types just fine, I've done C++, html, php and
Python just fine. But...it is yet-another-IDE-to-learn as you say.
On the flip side you (Kyran) know well that my fear about learning vi(m) or
another cmd-line based system is that I have to keep using it to remember
how to do everything. The joy of WingIDE is that I can pick it up every 6

What plug-ins for VIM do you use and what addtions to .vimrc? I use
cygwin, vim and gvim all the time but never thought of looking for a
python code completion plugin. For "c" development I use taglist and
ctags.

Just to offer an alternative perspective, I'm still not convinced that most
Python programming needs an IDE. For me one of the advantages of a dynamic
language, and scripting languages in general, is speed and ease of

I have used PyDev. It requires Eclipse which is a mixed blessing. Eclipse
does a LOT more (feature bloat or kitchen sink - it is one tool that does
all?) than PyDev, but is not as easy to use as I would like. (probably needs
a screencast or 50 ;-)
I did a bit with Komodo. It is very good, but the project I was using it on
