On the topic of how a videoblog could look different, check out this project:
http://newsdate2011.com/one/
Nathan Frietas (OG videoblogger in NYC) helped do the styling of the page.

I have no idea how it was built, but this is the kind of thing I think of.
The video is displayed differently than on a plain blog.
i think this ability will attract video/film folks to what we're doing.

That really works better for video and indicates that the Theatre form
makes more sense for video than the Blogging, diary form.

Holy fuck.
I started watching this for the issue at hand  -- looking at the page layout -- and there in the video pops up Carl Hancock Rux.

People in this video -- some of them are amazing performers who I know from another world. Who I've been scratching and clawing to try to bring to this medium / to the online video world. And there some of them are w/o me having any clue.

How'd that happen?? Small small world.

and yes -- great to keep looking that the design possibilities and see what it is we want / what people will want most / how we can make a flexible structure that can be used in different ways by different people.

I like how different this site is.
It also feels kind of technologically-shady / ie: like the design might fall apart.
I miss not having any info or buttons to info.

I confirmed Carl's involved only because I know how to shorten a URL from http://newsdate2011.com/one/ to http://newsdate2011.com/ and surf from there...

So something like this that also has subtle links to the key info would be good.

I do love how this puts the focus on the video, and gets rid of the bloggyness. Like ABC's full episode player. Things like this turn the computer screen into more of a TV screen....

what else??????

I really don't like that particular page.

It's one thing to make video the spotlight - that part I like. But there's no navigation, no way to know where you are or how to figure out where you are, whose work you're viewing, etc, and the mouseover thingy at the bottom makes scrollbars pop on and off as you move the mouse (if your browser window isn't wide enough) which is very distracting and ugly.

If we go this route it needs to feel more stable. Kinda what Jen said.

I agree.
Though I like the concept... and actually thats somewhat resembling the siab style at videobloggers.org with the video widget in place.... and I can implement a fisheye nav as well... i've seen it around.... but this site seems shaky right now.  It didnt perform well for me.

What I think is important are "viewing modes".
back when i gave a shit about vlogdir.com, I started to implement such an experience... using modal window approach.  The same ideas can still be applied for siab.

We keep pages with context, bloggy or not.... and what you can do is allow for users to launch a more immersive viewing experience similar to what this site is trying to do.  I've done it a few times myself for clients... typically using modal windows as a secondary overlay UI with thumbs and a player.

I'll have more to say on this as it relates to Mozilla Prism soon ;)

It is using flash and is pretty much written as a flash project. So,
you can't get to any individual videos - how do i link to one cliip
rather than the whole project? when was the content shot, etc? it
isn't a video blog, and breaks most of the features that makes a
blog, and a video blog, a blog (comments, rss, trackback?)

The notion that it doesn't have any bloggie-ness is cool. I like
that. As a platform it doesn't really feel as advanced as SIAB. It's
a flash thing, and as such it's a one off thing. It's not about
networking. But as a show piece it's cool. I think people could get
into making more sites that are about 1 thing or 1 movie. I don't see
an issue with that at all, but for me, it would be better to have that
page as a page that you get to from a site - so it becomes a page in
that site.

I really like the thumbnail slider on the bottom and video in center
concept. It would be ideal to have a SIAB plug-in that gave these two
elements, player and thumbnails, as a pair that can be configured.
Then you could place them on your site and surround them with other
content (if you want).
