Hi shogi-fan,

The last saturday (01.16.10) was held a tournement in the west of France, the first one of a new shogi club in Rochefort.
As a new club, majority of the participant was beginner (I was the only one with an official rating) and never played an official game befor these one.

Althought Rochefort is a small town, 8 players came to win the title of best beginner and a shogi game.

You could find the result of the tournement bellow.

The aim of this mail is not to basically communicate the result of a small tournement, but rather my feeling about a beginner pool and the experience I get with this tournement.

I asked several advice from different people about how to do the matching and if an handicap tournement as german one was a good idea or not. Some people are discussing about the decrease rating problem and the difficulty for beginner to get a fair rating.
In my opinion, the Swiss system and the choice of 6p handicap between <10 kyu player and beginner were well adapted to such tournement. This case is very unique because of the ratio player : beginner is very low, but if each isolated player successed in creating a pool of beginner, this could become more uncommon.
The result attest of the succes of these choices : stronger beginner (they trained monthly since a year) get an establish ELO above 550, medium player get a definitive rating quite low but corresponding to their strength. In fact, total beginner losted all their game but it was predictable even if they are good chess player for kids.

Anyway, I would like to apologize the ease to organise a small tournement in oposition to the low number of them. For instance, in France, their is only 3 known open tournement per year and 2 intern tournement, whereas their was a intern tournement each month in my previous go club. The number of potential participant was not the same, and I know the difficulty for getting a place for 2 days, a free week-end for enought player. But the idea of doing 1-2 round per evening during 3-6 weeks could be a solution for getting more people involve into tournement.
I am going to do so (a intern tournement one month of two) and wait for your advice if you have some. Moreover, since the small difference between player, I will be the only one with handicap (6p and I will progressively decrease to 4p).

To conclude, I apologize if some people find my mail a bit aggressive or inadapted to such group, but I dont mind it and only want to share my experience and ideas.

Regards,
Benjamin
