Hi

I cannot export my dictionary as a MDF. I get an error message saying
that it cannot find a database type: MDF rich text format. I guess I
am missing some files or something. I had a crash a short while ago
while toolbox was open maybe they got lost then. How can I get my
dictionary to export? Please help!

To some extent, it depends on whether you have all the rest of the MDF files. I'm going to give instructions as if you don't.

Even though you don't need a new project, the new project does come with the whole set of MDF files. So do this as a way to get those files. You can delete the folder that is created afterwards.

1) Close Toolbox if it is running.

2) Do Start, All Programs, Toolbox, Start New Project.
This will bring up the "wizard" to create a new project. It defaults to making a folder named either "Toolbox" or "Toolbox Project" (depending on which version you have), on the C: drive.

NOTE: It will put a shortcut on the desktop named Toolbox Project. It won't ask. If you already have a shortcut named that, it will be replaced by the new one. So rename it now to something more specific, like "French Project" or whatever language you're working in.

3) If Toolbox's defaults don't conflict with something you already have, then take the defaults. Otherwise, you could name the "new project" something like "Delete This Folder" or anything that lets you know it's a temporary folder that you intend to get rid of.

4) Using the Windows Explorer, navigate into the new folder that was just created. Inside the main folder is a folder named "Settings". Enter that folder.

5) You will see 21 files whose name starts with MDF. These are the set of files that MDF export expects to have available. Select these 21 files and do CTRL+C to copy them.

6) Navigate to your real Toolbox project folder. Get into the settings folder (you will see lots of files with *.lng and *.typ and your *.prj file itself).

7) Paste (CTRL+V) the set of files you have copied. If there are any duplicates, you will be asked if you should replace them. ***Say NO*** (Actually, the only one you probably shouldn't replace is MDF.typ because it will have custom information for your working situation. The rest you have probably never modified, but saying NO is safest.)

8) Run Toolbox and try the export. It should work.

9) Go delete the new project folder. Also delete the Toolbox Project shortcut from your desktop.

Let me know.

Hi

I did as you instructed and I can now export, but only a portion of
each of the words in the dictionary gets out-puted into the RTF. Why
would this be?

Cheers
A

MDF has its own ideas of which fields should be output. To some extent
you can control that by the options you select.

To get the most fields to print, do the following.
Do File, Export.
Select the MDF export option that you are using.
Click on Modify.
Click on the Options button on the right side of the dialog box.
Check most or all of the options.
Also click on the "Select Fields to be Excluded" button. That also has
some control over which fields are printed.

If you click the Help button in both the first dialog box and the
Options dialog box, you will get some information about what the
program is trying to do. For more detailed information, -- the full
MDF manual -- go to
http://www.sil.org/computing/shoebox/MDF.html
Ignore the first chapter, it gives instructions for using the MDF
package with the DOS version of Shoebox. But most of the rest of the
manual is relevant. Note the link to the updates also.
