I'm not the right person to reply your query in a right sense, but IDOLS (/ Devi / Devta's) are "IMMERSED" in holy ganges (here water, ...with change of time) and we human being pray to THEM for coming to our place (invite THEM with prayer) next year for clearing all obstacles and make our life smooth - pray to THEM for we becoming "Good Human Being".

There is one version of the story Ganesh immersion. To reserve fresh water
of rainy reason in ponds, lakes, tanks and other water bodies, we need to
dig out old clay or soil in them. To show accordance between environmental
awareness and Hindu rituals, Ganesh idols are prepared with Clay of Ponds
and tanks.
But why clay idols are immersed in the same Ponds and tanks from where
artisans picked out clay ? The clay idol worshiped with turmeric and some
other natural herbs during Ganapathi navarathri, the herbal characters of
these materials help water animals like fish, tortoise etc grow well.
Are we doing this way ? Are we getting blessing from God or disguise ?
Are we helping water animals or doing harm ?
