JOSHUA PARK

Joshua Park has emerged as an exciting new addition to the Philly
local music scene. His EP “One Wish” was released in December 2007,
and a full length album, currently being recorded with a full band and
a lot of love, is on the horizon for release in 2009. This lyrically
driven singer/songwriter counts John Prine, Dan Bern, and Mason
Jennings among his strongest influences, and consistently delivers
poignant songs derived from his own life experience. As a solo artist,
an acoustic guitar trio, or supported by a full band Joshua has a raw
passion that is evident with every note. /// Moving to Philadelphia in
2001 opened a whole new door of live music in the thriving scene of
Philly’s singer/songwriter community. Attending local shows of artists
such as Birdie Busch, Cowmuddy, and Amos Lee provided motivation and a
serious drive to continue writing music

THEATER FIRE

Folk / Indie / Other

“Maybe it’s just because they’re Texans, but something about the
band’s third album, Matter and Light, seems to view introversion as a
form of secession. Perhaps because they’ve been forced to circle the
wagons and rechristen themselves, they’ve cultivated a strong
separatist streak in their music: With their clever orchestrations and
cleverer lyrics (best: “I’m not bitter but I hope she dies”), they
inhabit their little corner of the Lone Star state, and while you’re
invited to listen in, they’re not asking twice or saving you a seat.
Matter and Light, however, is far from inaccessible. The Fire have a
knack for curious, slightly off arrangements that reveal their layers
through repeated listens. Their cover of Elliott Smith’s “Say Yes”
says yes to music box bells, plunking banjo, mariachi horns, and
singing saw, but says no to lyrics. All they care about is Smith’s
mournful up-and-down melody, which makes a lovely album intermission.
“Uncle Wayne” marries a skipping rhythm to Don Feagin’s Smoggy vocals,
lyrics about particularly gruesome car-crash fatalities, and trumpets
playing one of the wryest fanfares ever. (It should be noted that the
video features actress Angela Bettis of May fame, which means it is
one of the best videos ever made). That fanfare only echoes Feagin’s
performance, which gravitates toward unannounced punchlines and
constant self-deprecation. “I’d like to help stop the war, but I just
stayed home and watched it on TV,” Heath sings on “Swashbuckler
Blues”. “I’d like to rob from the rich and give to the poor, but I’m
too lazy.” They may be territorial, but the Theater Fire are more
engaged with the world than even they realize” - (7.4) PITCHFORK

STRIPMALL BALLADS
Indie / Folk

While compared by some reviewers to Woody Guthrie, Kurt Cobain adn
A.P. Carter, Stripmall Ballads has developed a style entirely his own:
poetic, dark, energetic, possessed, and reluctantly romantic. An
obvious devote student of US roots musical tradition, he fuses
virtuosic historical convention with contemporary lyrics. Not afraid
of musical experimentation or the power of words, his prolific
performances and recordings have earned him a reputation for being
somwhere in between “a fire and brimstone preacher and a beat poet.”
Phillips Saylor’s ability to take a crowd from stomping their feet to
quiet reflection and back again is the result of nearly a decade of
non-stop touring and performing across North America; from his early
days playing shows to hobos under Maryland’s railroad bridges to
recent collaborations with some of new-folks most talented performers
(Jolie Holland, Sam Parton). With a new album, “Hooked”, slated for
release in 2009, Stripmall Ballads continues to evolve and surprise.

VANESSA MICALE
Folk / Americana / Experimental
Vanessa Micale was given a nylon string guitar around the time she was
migrating north to San Francisco, many moons ago. She briefly formed a
top secret band with Shinji Kittagawa called “the eavesdroppers.”
Together they played a handful of very raw shows before moving to
other parts of the world. She kept playing guitar, recording songs on
tape after tape after tape, spending many hours writing and singing in
rooms in San Francisco, Montevideo, and presently, in Los Angeles. She
has briefly collaborated with friends/drummers, Jeff Steiner, Gerald
Leroy, and last year, with Ted Brynes. At present, she collaborated
with her loop pedal. She will sing her heart out for you at dusk or
dawn or anytime in between, including broad daylight.

CHARLOTTE LITTLEHALES
Acoustic / Folk Rock / Blues

Charlotte Littlehales has never considered herself a performer, but it
seems she must perform regardless. At twenty three, she’s been writing
and performing her own music for eight years, a practice she picked up
as a sophomore in high school. It began with the first few chords she
learned on guitar and has yet to end, though it certainly changes,
traveling through rock, folk, jazz, and country.

BEVIN CAULFIELD
Folk / Indie / Soul

Singer/Songwriter, Bevin Caulfield’s roots are in rural South Jersey
where she grew up singing around a campfire and in the local church.
Her mother also required her to take piano lesson from the age of
five, which helped to shape her ear for melody and harmony. Music
became her focus in 2003, when she was a student at Villanova, living
across the street from the venue The Point. There, she met three self-
proclaimed songwriters, Amos Lee, Devin Greenwood and Forrest Glen.
Their aspirations inspired her to pursue music full time and she soon
moved to Philadelphia and immersed herself in the folk and indie music
scene. Songwriting came naturally as she taught herself the guitar and
soon began playing clubs like The Fire, Tin Angel, and World Café
Live. Bevin writes sassy and soulful songs about relationships, social
issues, and her experiences as an evolving being. Bevin is also the
songwriter/singer/keyboardist in the Downtempo/Trip-hop group,
Quintero and has spent time touring as a singer in Angel Band and
David Bromberg’s back-up band. She was also a part of The Super Humble
Country Band, featuring many of Philadelphia’s local favorites
including Hezekiah Jones, Hoots & Hellmouth, and Andrew Lipke. She has
shared the stage with Tift Merritt, Amos Lee, Don McClouskey, Ben
Arnold and several other national and regional artists. Bevin
Caulfield recently released her first EP, The Living EP, in December
2008. It highlights her original songs, recorded in Philadelphia at
Turtle Studios, Kawari Studios, and Ish’s Studio. The recording
features drummer Fred Berman (Amos Lee) , percussionist, Dante Bucci
(Mutlu) and was mixed and mastered by Phil Nicolo at Studio 4. Bevin
performs live on guitar and piano and most often with accompanists,
including her sister, Erin, on harmony vocals. “If you’re not familiar
with Bevin’s music yet, check her out immediately. Her voice is a
sultry, smooth melange of molasses and honey that oozes sinfully in
syrupy sweet silhouettes across the room and ensconces you in her
enchanting enigma.” -The Music Barista
