PADS & STEEL (Mem. of Capillary Action)
http://www.myspace.com/padsandsteel

"Pads and Steel provided a refreshing fun filled jazz flavored
set of originals with some silly satirical twists and a free, loose
performance style.
Engaging and intelligent, their set was my favorite of the night.
Once again, strong musicianship, but it's their candor, honesty
and directness that make this trio unique and engaging."
-review of July show at Black Lodge (Paul Green School of Rock)

"Conrad set out to Clark Park and the wonders that are, in our wild
wild West Philly... Imagine fifty or so kids looking like they might
have Googled the word Woodstock but with more H&M halters, plastic
water gun fights, and a handful of crust punks that all found comfort
in songs about how much the lead singer [David Fishkin] loves ice
cream."
-from Philebrity.com review of Pads & Steel's performance at Best Fest

MITCH FICTION (Mem. of National Eye & Adam Arcuragi, ex Raccoon, Dr.
Dog)
http://www.myspace.com/mitchfiction
http://www.freshoutmedia.com/indie-rock/mitch-is-the-shit-ready/
The band cites influences like Harry Nilsson and Neil Young
(specifically the album Zuma), but Mitch Fiction's sound also reaches
into a much bigger bag of classic greats than what might be present in
the band's collective record collection. There's a hint at some true
power pop sensibilities reminiscent of Big Star and a bit of a
grunge-y film left from scouring away the gritty remnants of 1990s
alt-rock acts like Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement. (Freshout Media)

TULSA (Boston, Park the Van Recs)
http://www.parkthevan.com/tulsa/
http://myspace.com/tulsamusic
Tulsa are slightly more earthbound, in that the seven songs on I Was
Submerged (Park the Van), the Boston quartet's new record, have actual
choruses and bridges. Singer-songwriter Carter Tanton also examines
loss and reunion with refreshing bounce. "I'm in love for the first
time," Tanton crows in "I Feel Great," with no apparent irony. "It
feels great/Thanks for asking." But his indie-seraphim voice is not of
this world — set in the same alpine reverb where Jim James of My
Morning Jacket lives — while the iridescent bloom of the guitars is
a
quality flashback to the clean-twang and country-fuzz blend of the
1968-69 Byrds. (David Fricke, Rolling Stone)

SANTA MARIAS (NYC, ex Friggs)
http://myspace.com/santamarias
NYC's Santa Marias is a smart strong, expressive trio with a penchant
for the cranky who have created a fusion of sound that supports their
diverse/insane musical tastes - from Godspell, to Sonic Youth, to PJ
Harvey, to Trini Lopez, to Shellac. These tri-borough noise-pop girls
rock an intoxicating blend of bare-naked vocals and yearning lyrics
that suggests an allegiance to the early pop vocal arrangements of
Phil Spector set against an articulately produced garage-pop sound of
dirty, noisy, rusty guitars. Santa Marias rose out of the ashes of
several highly respected NYC rock acts. The line up: chief songwriter
Mitzi Dodge (STP, the Friggs), Palmyra Delran (The Friggs, Pink Slip
Daddy), and Betsy Todd (MotorDolly, Old Baby). After the dissolution
of the Friggs, Dodge and Delran began playing shows as a guitar and
drum duo. Fate stepped in, in the form of Betsy Todd, also an improv
comedian (UCB Theater, Magnet Theater) to fill the bill as bassist &
vocalist. In 2002, they released one full-length, raw, garagey CD as
The Booty Olympics. Five years later, the three reinvented themselves
as Santa Marias, with a totally evolved new sound. Santa Marias'
energetic, unpredictable and fun live shows stand in stark contrast to
the shoegazers and "too cool for school" attitudes of most NYC bands.

Armed with an electric violin, a ukulele and a bass guitar, Bitch
(formerly of Bitch and Animal), is on the road and rampage again with
a fistful of new songs from her debut solo and Kill Rock Stars
release, Make This/Break This. She is an entertainer and songwriter
who has pulled audiences to their feet worldwide with her politically
charged and personally wrenched lyrics, her atypical instrumentation,
minimalist sound and wildly dramatic stage persona. Make This/Break
This, produced by June Millington (Fanny) and mixed by Roma Baran
(Laurie Anderson), was made over the course of two years with her
engineer, Wayne Schrengohst, in her home studio in NYC. Upon
completing the record, Bitch played a sold-out 5-week residency in
NYC, which landed her on the cover of two magazines. The record was
featured on Showtime's "The L Word," and has caught the ear of the
Indigo Girls, who took her on their fall record release tour.
Audiences also caught Bitch making her film-acting debut in John
Cameron Mitchell's (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) feature film, Shortbus.

FUSE DJ's

When the untimely departure of girL party left a hole in the city's
social offerings for queer women, resident DJs Kit and Phoenix and a
posse of organizers and artists decided to do something about it.
Their vision was to keep the monthly dance party and performance space
alive as a safe and accessible spot for women, including transgender
women and men, to come together. Fuse was born, bringing the music
back every month starting this Saturday at Sal's—without missing a
beat since girL's last bash in December. Same time, same $5 cover,
same cheap drinks. Fuse organizers plan to feature local spoken-word
and dance artists in the downstairs space while stepping up party
themes and promotions (read: more freebies). So put on your hot shirt,
pocket a fiver and get ready for some pool, because the party's
getting started all over again. (Angelina Conti, PW)

LotSix is a Philadelphia based musician, songwriter, & multimedia
performance artist who jokingly refers to her unique art as
"self-karaoke": live singing to original prerecorded music with

by videos that further convey the many dimensions of her angsty wry

THIS WEEK @ INTERNATIONAL HOUSE
KEN RUSSEL

Thursday, September 27 - Saturday, September 29

Directors in Focus: Ken Russell

Ken Russell is perhaps one of the most prolific British filmmakers of
the 20th century. Beginning in the late 1950s with his work for the
BBC television program Monitor, Russell eagerly began to reshape the
documentary tradition. With a keen eye and a penchant for flamboyance
and eroticism, Russell gained international acclaim with his feature
film adaptation of DH Lawrence’s Women in Love. Throughout the 70s,
he would direct some of the most dazzling and controversial films of
his career, many of which were of the historical biopic genre.

His filmic recreations of the lives of various artists and composers
were often chided for their excessiveness, but they helped make
Russell a household name. His 1975 film adaptation of The Who’s
concept album Tommy is still considered one of the best rock ‘n roll
films of all time. While his later works became a bit more uneven,
often lacking the lavish production values of the 70s, Russell
continued to shock and amaze with films like Crimes of Passion, Gothic
and The Lair of the White Worm. To celebrate Ken Russell’s 80 th
birthday as well as the release of Joseph Lanza’s Phallic Frenzy:
Ken Russell and His Films, International House takes another look at
the life and work of this legendary filmmaker.

Thursday, September 27 at 7pm

WOMEN IN LOVE

dir. Ken Russell, UK, 1969, 35mm, 131 mins, color

This acclaimed adaptation of DH Lawrence’s novel charts the
sexuality of two sisters in the 1920s. Featuring a ground-breaking and
infamous nude male wrestling scene, the story negotiates the ups and
downs of love and relationships. The film boasts an all-star cast
including Oliver Reed, Alan Bates and Glenda Jackson.

Friday, September 28 at 7pm

THE MUSIC LOVERS

dir. Ken Russell, UK, 1970, 35mm, 123 mins, color

Introduced by Joseph Lanza, reading from his new book, Phallic Frenzy:
Ken Russell and His Films. Phallic Frenzy will be available for
purchase.

A wild and tragic sensuality pervades this striking and controversial
biographical account of 19 th century Russian composer Piotr
Tchaikovsky (Richard Chamberlain). Ken Russell used Tchaikovsky's
music along with incredible dream sequences to illuminate the life of
this prolific composer who may or may not have had homosexual feelings
and encounters.

Saturday, September 29 at 7pm

TOMMY

dir. Ken Russell, UK, 1975, 35mm, 111 mins, color

Tommy is the greatest rock-visual extravaganza ever recorded on film.
Featuring songs from The Who and starring frontman Roger Daltrey, Ann-
Margret and Oliver Reed with performances by Tina Turner, Elton John,
Eric Clapton and more, this rock opera is given bold, gothic treatment
by Russell. No other rock musical has ever enjoyed such success.

Joseph Lanza writes impressionistic histories and specializes in film
and popular music. He is perhaps best known for Elevator Music: A
Surreal History of Muzak, Easy Listening, and Other Moodsong, a foray
that Entertainment Weekly dubbed “one of the few pop-history books
that won’t put you to sleep.†His other books include Vanilla Pop:
Sweet Sounds from Frankie Avalon to ABBA, which Publisher’s Weekly
called “surprisingly flavorful†; Gravity: Tilted Perspectives on
Rocketships, Rollercoasters, Earthquakes, and Angel Food, described by
The Los Angeles Times as “brilliant†and “exhilarating†; and
Fragile Geometry: The Films, Philosophy, and Misadventures of Nicolas
Roeg, which the British Film Institute hailed as “by common consent,
the best book†on the subject. With Phallic Frenzy: Ken Russell and
His Films, Lanza again takes on a controversial filmmaker, with a
literary style that approximates the thrill ride of a Russell film.

Free admission members above Internationalist level; $5
Internationalist members, students + seniors; $7 general admission.

In advance at Ticketweb.com and 866.468.7619 or 1/2 hour before
showtime at the box office.

this land of Fire, Ice and corrosive Solitude.

before showtime.

PUPPET UPRISING
Sept 28th
produces and promotes cutting-edge theater and puppetry in
Philadelphia
by bringing local and touring artists to perform at various venues.
These shows are geared toward grown-ups, but fine for kids.

September 28th at the Rotunda

An Evening of PICTURE PERFORMANCE in Three Parts:

THE NOTHING FACTORY
A musical shadow theater extravaganza
by Erik Ruin & Reid Books
CHROME FETUS COMICS
Cartoon projections by Hans Rickheit
with live music by Katt Hernandez
KAMISHIBAI THEATER
Picture performance from Japan
rendered by Ryoga Katsuma
Friday, September 28th, at the Rotunda,
4014 Walnut Street, West Philadelphia
Cheap Art Bazaar at 7:30, puppet shows at 8:00.
Suggested donation: $6 or less.

Puppetry is often thought of as being "character-based" theater whose
protagonists are moving figures, such as hand puppets or marionettes.
Puppet Uprising celebrates another thread of performing with objects:
picture theater! Emerging in ancient India, picture theater was the
work of wandering storyteller/artists who gradually spread their craft
throughout Europe and Asia in the form of portable torchlit banners or
scrolling shadow scenes. These forms eventually evolved into what we
usually think of as "puppetry," as well as the picture books and
comics that we see today. On September 28th, 2007 Puppet Uprising
presents three variations on the picture theater tradition:

Shadow puppeteer Erik Ruin mixes hand-cut slide projection and moving
scenery to illustrate THE NOTHING FACTORY, an illuminated musical
allegory set in a fictional world where everybody wants everything.
With story and songs by avant-punk musician Reid Books, narrative
performance by Anissa Weinraub (An Olive on the Seder Plate), and a
dystopic live soundtrack by the Aetherial Underpants Orchestra
(members of Red Devil and International Anthems for Irrational
Numbers), THE NOTHING FACTORY boasts the dramatic consultation of
Missoula Oblongata director Sarah Lowry. Erik Ruin will also have
silkscreen prints and other original art for sale.

Xeric Award-winner Hans Rickheit will give a live reading of
selections from his semi-surreal CHROME FETUS COMICS, with on-the-spot
improvisations by violinist Katt Hernandez and others. And there will
be a special presentation of KAMISHIBAI, a form of picture theater
that rose to popularity in Japan during the early 20th century where
it was employed by bicycling candy vendors to boost sales. "Invitation
Card From Papa" is a modern-day kamishibai performed with panache by
visiting artist Ryoga Katsuma.

ROTUNDA SHOWS
Sat. 10/6@8pm

This Ambitious Orchestra presents a night of cabaret, old and new!
Hosted by the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus'Philomena Bindlestiff!

Admission is $5

featuring:

This Ambitious Orchestra

Corn Mo & .357 Lover

Oscuro Quintet (members of F!)

Vic Thrill (pictured)
Nicki Jaine

The Absinthe Drinkers

In the second installment of their ongoing concert series, This
Ambitious Orchestra presents an evening of cabaret music and
entertainment. While most people are familiar with the aesthetic of
cabaret's past, here are a few that are developing its future.

Philomena Bindlestiff, renowned sideshow and circus entertainer, will
be your hostess. She is guaranteed to astonish and amaze you with her
sideshow abilities, as well as introduce you to the following
unparalleled performers:

Starting with The Absinthe Drinkers, who spew catchy Devo-meets-Tom
Waits whatever-rock, spun from classic works of literature. They'll be
performing a revue of their Philly Fringe show about monsters.

Nicki Jaine is a 21st-century chanteuse, channeling the mystique of
Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf into a modern singer-songwriter
delivery. She also is an accomplished saw player.

Vic Thrill, with his quirky brand of electro-rock and bandmate BAM on
video art, could easily be a vaudevillian crooner transported back in
time from the year 2022. Simply has to be seen to be believed.

The newly-formed Oscuro Quintet is an accordion and strings ensemble
creating a modern take on tango music, accompanied by live dancers.
The brainchild of F! band-member Shinjoo Cho.

Corn Mo has built a devout following not just by touring as support
for They Might Be Giants, Ben Folds or singing with The Polyphonic
Spree, but also as a rock accordionist with a voice that could knock
you over. He'll be playing with his full band, .357 Lover, a rare
treat!

This Ambitious Orchestra is Brooklyn's 18-some member rock symphony.
With no guitar in sight, they use woodwinds, strings and brass to nail
home their aggressive brand of orchestral punk and power ballads.

Press are encouraged to attend - please email benj...@ickies.com for
comps.

ZINE FEST AT ROTUNDA
Sun. 10/7, 12-6pm
The Philly Zine Fest

Our goal is to embrace written and verbal communication as much as
possible without constraints. At the zine fest, be prepared for
everything from personal experiences to artistic talent to first-hand
politics. Trading of information is in abundance, and in many formats.

This year, the Philly Zine Fest is part of the 215 Festival,
Philadelphia's own home-grown literary arts festival, celebrating
writers, writing, books, art, and independent publishing. Events
include readings, films, and "cross-pollinated performances" held in
galleries, bars, museums, and theaters citywide. The Festival is a
showcase for performers that are as smartly engaging as a book and
authors that are as fun to wattch as a band.
