I got most of my old emails back. I'm missing about a 2 to 3 week period at
the end of October, but Dan is hopeful that he'll be able to retrieve those.
I still don't have an address book, but he's working on that, too.

Dan says the problem was the City has been using Outlook 2000, which causes
any pst file over 2 GB to corrupt without warning. They have updated me to
Outlook 2003, which does not have that problem.  They are also working to
set up all computer backups to save muliple versions of each pst file, so
that if it corrupts for any reason, there will be an older version saved.
The problem so far has been that the newer corrupt file overwrites the older
good file.

And the cost of upgrading and maintaining the newer Microsoft outlook software is cheaper than a google apps option? Yeah, right. How the dollars just piss away. I said my peace. Let them march in their own direction

There are legitimate reasons not to use Google apps, mostly involving a loss
of control. You don't control the privacy, the storage location, or the
access.  Google has a terrible reputation for support.  People with
technical problems have had to wait weeks to get anyone to respond to their
need, and in the meantime there is nothing they can do, and no way to use
their email.

It might be working for you, Tom, and is good for people who need to access
their email from multiple locations, but that doesn't mean that's what
everyone else should be using. I don't know of anyone at City Hall who has
the capability of checking their email from a Blackberry, for example. We
each have one PC and that's it. We don't need to access our email from home
or on the road. So the advantages of cloud email are not so great here.

FYI, Regis is adding "Points of Interest" to the GIS map, so I directed him
to our online Scenic Resources Inventory.  He will be adding information
from that inventory to the GIS system.
