I need a really simple breakout board for an SMD I have (18pin 2mm pitch
DIL).

Any ideas how I might do this without spending £80 on a PCB?

At a push I could solder little wires onto it.

Cheers,

Henry

Hi Henry,

ChrisC is a bit of a ninja at soldering and may be the best to give
you advice, but a technique that seems to work well for him is to
stick the chip upside-down to something (veroboard, DIP socket etc)
and solder on the wires to break it out.

You can get SMD breakout PCBs which are designed to be hand soldered;
not too expensive but once you've added postage etc i guess it adds
up. see something like http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/product_info.php?products_id=500;
there are lots about, and probably some in the uk too.

What you trying to breakout?!

The NC4 bluetooth board. The pads are huge so I don't need serious
soldering foo. I just wanted a neat little board I could plug in. I
think I can do it with a bit of strip board and some small wire. I'll
head over to Maplin.

btw, I'm trying to order 3 of those boards. Hopefully they'll arrive by
next week and I/we can play with them at shdc.

There's €15 postage and a minimum order size, so if anyone wants
anything from roundsolutions.com I'll try to add it to the order
(definite orders at this stage).

Hi Henry,

FYI: a PCB can cost much less.

Recently a friend of mine used BatchPCB for a small PCB.
https://www.batchpcb.com

He ordered 4 boards, spending:
$40.50 for handling and shipping costs
$10 for each board

NOTE: $ not £! ;-)

Also Farnell UK has a lot of SMD ADAPTOR starting from £3.13:
http://uk.farnell.com/jsp/search/results.jsp?N=500005+1000161&Ns=PRICE_PLS_006_PRICE1%7c0&Ntk=gensearch_001&Ntt=ADAPTOR%2C+SMD&Ntx=

NOTE: The basic shipping is free, so for less then £4 you can have at
home what you need.

HTH,
Emilio
