SHDC Cambridge Hacker Meetup will be on Sat 16th in the evening, and
has a new venue!

We're going to hold this one at "The Shop" on Jesus Lane (map:
http://www.theshopjesuslane.co.uk/#/contactus)

Also, we moved it to 7pm-late to make it more of an evening thing so
it doesn't cut in to the day so much, and also opens up the
possibility of weekday meetups instead of weekends.

I'm still working with Jonny to try and come up with a permanent
hackspace, so this is a bit of a test; would be good to hear the
interest in having one in cambridge.

Please pass the message on to any hackers you know; it is an open
invitation so anyone can drop by and just say hi!

btw, no alcohol at this venue, but cake is still very welcome from
newbies :)

See you there!
Simon

Is there an agenda?

As in, a short list of folk bringing something in to show off?

I'm much more likely to be able to make an weekend evening, and being
in a public space will reduce the feeling of intrusion (even with
cake) for newbies and those who can only make it occassionally, IMO.

Awesome, I've been looking forward to seeing the new venue!

I note that SHDC isn't in the public shared calander [1]_, can you add it?

We should be going in there soon, I've asked the events person to put us in.

They (The Shop) are looking for someone to update the calendar for them - they're offering free usage of the venue (usually £10/2hr session) for SHDC if we take it on. Anyone interested?

How hard is it to update a Google Calendar? I must mis-understand what
you mean...

So erm, how do they propose to send the information to whoever
volunteers that takes less time time than filling in a calendar??

I suppose one could hack up a super simple interface for them. That
might make a nice SHDC project ;)

What sort of facilities are available at The Shop; power, heating, Wi-
fi? Are there benches/tables with good lighting? Any tools available?
Or is it a case of bring everything you might need?

We will have power, tables, chairs, wifi and heating. The lighting is excellent. The tools there tend to be kind of 'transient' - so I recommend bringing everything you might need (and taking it away with you!)

If you're coming in a car and it's easy, perhaps bring a 4-way power adapter though... I don't know how many plugs there are.

If we get a large number of people we may need to improvise with seating.

Hope that helps,
Jonny

Thanks John. I'm hoping to actually make this one. Timing's right for me.

Simon,

Do you have any SHDC poster designs?

I’m doing a part-time course at Anglia Ruskin and I sent a link to my lecturer; he’s wondering if we should put up posters. I also spammed everyone at work, in-case anyone was interested.

I’m not sure what I’m bringing along with me yet, still early days for my UAV thing: www.outsider-uav.blogspot.com, but I’ve got an evening pass from the wife ;-)

I went in to The Shop today to check everything was okay - it looks great.

There are a few things to be aware of though.

1. The heating seems to have broken, but they have a bunch of fan heaters - it wasn't too cold, but if Saturday night is a really cold night, we're going to want to be wearing warm socks

2. Someone has taken their extension cords away, so if you have and can easily bring an extension cord - please do.

3. The internet isn't that fast. If you want things like entire Linux ISOs you'll probably have a better time if you try to get them before hand ;)

4. There are two broken sewing machines there. We're free to do whatever we want with them (fixing being an obvious bonus) but if anyone has been desperate to build a sewing machine based robot, this is your chance.

Hopefully see you on Saturday,
Jonny

Hi All, just a brief hello, I'm aiming to be there on Saturday, and if
I can make it, I will bring cake (and, with any luck, a power adapter
to add to the mix)

Jonny - is the WiFi fine for anything other than large scale
downloads?

Best,

J

Sounds a pretty sweet idea - guess it depends how broken the machines
are :p
