When the recycling dumpsters were brought in, our building was the
lucky recipient of a second trash dumpster. As if one at the back of
the yard wasn't enough, we got a second. Yesterday they were full to
the top, someone had put boxes in that weren't broken down. I did not
see who did this. Later in the day several boxes had been removed
from one of the dumpsters and dumped behind the dumpster, essentially
in our private space. I do not own the building, my landlord who
lives upstairs does. These boxes will now remain there unless one of
us takes the time to break them down and throw them away. I have my
suspicions of who took these boxes out of the dumpster, but I will not
post a name. I want to know why this person (or someone else if that
be the case) think it's acceptable to dump the overflow trash in our
yard......

I understand your frustration as I constantly place items in dumpsters that people just place around or near,
(I'm sure the trash-man will climb down out of his truck and pick up that broken end-table for you).
And no, large-item pickup is not every week and does not work if you throw mattresses on both sides of the dumpster.

I also spend time cutting up the 10' limbs people place on top of the yard-waste dumpster.

Unfortunately, this is just life in a mixed and diverse neighborhood.
Either you just do it yourself or your alley looks like cr_p.
Wondering if your neighbors are completely illiterate or dumb as a bag-of-hammers will drive you nuts.
I try my best just to clean up after other people and enjoy my results with a smile on my face.

Good luck

I have the same issues and there are 3 or 4 of my neighbors that help keep the alley cleaned up. Today is “sweep up the broken glass that squirts out of the back of the garbage truck day” if anyone wants to help out…..

You may also consider the fact that there is some illegal dumping going on.  After several months of having the dumpster behind my house emptied by the City and the very next day noticing it was full again, I started watching when I could and saw some guy drive up and dump several items out of his truck.  When I went out to talk with him, he stopped, got in his truck and went down the alley until he found another recycle bin.  I took his driver's license number, contacted the City Service Bureau and made a complaint.  After having this happen two or three times over a period of 5-6 months, the dumping stopped.  I don't know if this will solve your problem, but illegal dumping is a large problem in City.

No, this isn't illegal dumping, one of the boxes was for a piece of
equipment a neighbor uses in their profession. They should have
broken their boxes down, and the person who removed them should have
walked 30 feet to another dumpster instead of putting the boxes in our
yard.

On a similar, but somewhat unrelated note, what a pity all that
cardboard is going into dumpsters when there are recycling bins no
more than half a block away. I wish there was some way we could
encourage recycling, especially since the city makes it so easy.

How is it illegal if he is putting it in a dumpster? Isn’t that why we have them? Even if it isn’t his personal dumpster?

Annoying to have someone else fill up your block’s dumpster? I agree.

I think some of the community gardens might want cardboard, but you should
ask first. I know Botanical Heights wants cardboard to put down underneath
the mulch they are laying around the planting beds. It really prevents weed
growth.

There is a legal limit on dumping. More than one's fair share of a dumpster is supposed to be taken directly to the City Dump.  So, for example, if you are rehabbing a building, you are not allowed to just shoot down every alley filling up every dumpster you see.  If you Google "City of St.  Louis trash laws," you might find all the details.
