I'm helping a friend set up a shareabouts instance for a neighborhood project. I'm running into 1 issue and have 1 question.

1) dotcloud got rid of sandbox apps, so i guess it's in the pay world now. is there a solution that is similar other than webfaction? also has anyone succeeded in something that makes it easier to have a clean URL that you want? I have a webserver, but I have run into issues with setting up django on my webserver previously...

2) Within the dotcloud setup, it seems to have auto-generated two env variables for the dotcloud environment variables, and i'm seeing an error that says "scaling error" in the dashboard. Does anyone have any pointers about troubleshooting dotcloud? The more detail is "this service is not horizontally scaled. if this service fails it could bring down your entire application"

The project should be here, but isn't showing up: http://mountrainier-gretabyrum.dotcloud.com/

I set all the extra variables that should allow it to work. Any thoughts here would be helpful!

Thanks for the reminder about dotCloud. We are evaluating the best options for free hosting - OpenShift from RedHat is one possible direction. Anyone tried it? We're also considering changes to make an even lighter Shareabouts client that can be run from github pages.

Webfaction has been more difficult than dotcloud for everyone who used it so far, though we do have documentation (thanks to the community for putting this together) -- https://github.com/openplans/shareabouts/blob/master/doc/DEPLOY.md#deploying-to-webfaction

The scaling message sounds more like a warning than an error. Can you send the full trace when you do a deploy?

Mjumbe and I worked through a few things in IRC...

1) git status and committing all untracked files
2) Adding an env variable "DEBUG=True"

And now it works!

Thanks Mjumbe!!!

Still love to hear about other hosting tools that people have used!

Hi All,

Picking this thread back up again.

We're running into issues with dotcloud that it's giving us memory errors and saying that we need to scale vertically. a few questions...

- The site isn't getting so much traffic, might the issue just be that we need to restart the instance?
- Do we actually need to scale the application or is it some other issue?

Any ideas anyone? Anyone else experienced this?

Hey Georgia,

Restarting the instance occasionally is not a bad idea, and will at least temporarily fix overage issues. How much memory do you have reserved for your instance? Logging into the Dotcloud dashboard and going to the overview page for your application should tell you this. When you check the metrics tab of your dashboard, for the last 7 days or so, do you see any/much red on the top graph? If the site isn't getting much traffic, 128 MB should technically be enough, but add another 64 or so onto that if you want to live without the restarts.

Thank Mjumbe!

I couldn't figure out how to restart it, but I did up the memory a bit and it seems to be much better! No red on the graph, but it was saying that there was only 4MB of unused memory.

Thanks!
