I am looking for any Linux expert who understands how to implement "Adsotate" onto a Linux server. http://www.adsotate.com/textbook/?q=node/732. The project is to create web pages on top or a website.
A bunch of people mainly Mandarin language teachers would like to create a Mandarin language learning web "magazine". This market is growing steadily and sooner or later such an online magazine will become viable if not already so. We are just at the formulating stage.
Anyone heard of "English Town". This website is for learning English - very popular in Hong Kong. It started way back in 1999 before being bought up by its current parent company "English First". i.e it survive the dot com crash. Our story is going to be similar. We are right in the middle of China. There will never be shortage of Mandarin teachers. The trend in learning Mandarin is sustainable. So we start it, we make it "workable" or viable, then we sell it.
This is initially only as a "hobby" until we can prove that the magazine is viable and we are able to earn advertising Yuan or benefit from other sponsors.
Anyone interested in taking part? please contact me. (David Kong)
The Linux expert person must preferably know some Mandarin Chinese, or is learning Mandarin. Basically what the adsotate does is act like an online dictionary in the background. Users who come to the website would need to be able to "switch on" or "switch off' the feature as they require. The rest of the "magazine" is like any other website. So apart from the writers we would probably need a more full time "webmaster" at some stage to setup webpages or maintain the site etc.
Different people have different ideas about Adsotate. It is not really proven that using adsotate will greatly advance someone learning Mandarin. But it is free..... so I thought of incorporating it as a useful "feature" of the magazine.
I am a Linux user, not an expert, I was a interested in what Adso would do so I installed it a while ago on my laptop
Firstly it needs little knowledge to install and use. It runs straight out of the box.
I do not see any need to do any C++ programming to implement it?
To build a web front end using say PHP would not be too hard, I already put a MySQL version of CEDICT online previously, not that it is particularly useful, just to test all the character display and database storage complocations and be sure everything works OK with a database of 40,000 records.
If I were interested I could set up a web server with facility which you could use, but WHY?
There are other functionally equivalents freely available?
If there is some intellectual property that is under your own control it may be useful to exploit that in a controled way.
I am happy to cooperate If there is a worthwhile project?

Thanks for your email. I had another interested IT expert test out the adsotate before. But I think I need at least two "web publishing" "deep-level" linux experts at the start since this is intended ONLY as a part-time project for all initially, or even for an "indefinite" time, until it can generate sufficient revenues. More interested parties would be good. This just means we can be more flexible as the project progresses. Anyway according to Frank, some of the pinyin cannot be shown. If this situation is just "marginal", then no change is needed and we just wait for further "updates" of free Adsotate as it is upgraded. I have never met the maker of Adsotate so perhaps if this is one of the major attraction of our "product" we should be prepared to have a "back door", or re-populate or refurbish the database from other sources ourselves. As you will agree costs of this project is really cheap since all the tools are almost free. Being inexpensive means we can afford to experiment and hopefully eventually find the "formula".
I need to know more about you and where you are located. Hopefully you are in Shanghai. How long will you be in China? I am not too technical, my job is to gather the interested parties and enable this "web magazine" to come into being. The other party I have to convince are the qualified mandarin teachers.
Anyway, when I get sufficient interests or commitments from various essential parties, I will hold a meeting to get everyone acquainted.
Regards,
David Kong
