I'll be driving down with Bill Monsen. Hope to see some familiar faces out on the route.

I'll be there.  I did their two 200Ks and the 300K as well. This will be my first 400K.  I plan on doing the PCH 600K though since the SCR 600K is the week before the Furnace Creek 508.

I'll be there - too close to home to miss.

Me!

It's a big responsibility but someone's gotta carry that red lantern. :)

Ken was superb! I was just reciting high school physics course on the
way back from Greenfield: "The faster you go, the more headwind you
get" (fun link: http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/survival.htm).
It was fun, at least first 300km :)

For us slowpokes the winds turned out nicely. :)

There was a tailwind until Greenfield and then it became still right at the turnaround so the return trip was quite pleasant, especially once I caught up with David, Vicky, Charlie, and Lois at Buena Vista.

Agreed! On the way to Greenfield, I stopped at Fort Romie Road to check directions and nearly got blown off my bike. On the return, the winds were gone (or that Cup O' Noodles at the mini-mart had some secret ingredients). It took me only a little longer to get back to Marina than it took to get there with the tailwinds.

As a member of the Lantern Rouge group, I'll also confirm that we had gentle winds on the return. You just rode too fast, Gintautas! ;-)

As Bill saw my sorry face at Buena Vista he must have switched the
wind off :) We took it easy from Marina and I recovered OK.

The things I will remember:
- cold dump morning and workers doing warm-up in the field near HMB
(that put a smile on my face);
- strawberry smell in the air between Aptos and Hwy 1;
- 7 avocados for $1 (they are $1.79 each in my grocery store) in Moss
Landing;
- different shades of green all around in Salinas valley;
- grapes ready to be picked up on River Rd;
- gas station burrito never tasted so good (in Greenfield);
- Ken's optimism at turn around point ("Maybe if we wait, the wind
will stop?", apparently it did 6 hours later...)

Thanks for the nice ride SCR!

> - different shades of green all around in Salinas valley;

I was not looking forward to the Marina to Greenfield and back section of this ride, based largely on my one and only trip along the valley in June on the 1000km. Then, it was windier still, and there was a very low ceiling as the Marine Layer of fog pretty much obscured the hillsides on both sides of the valley. Back then, I looked forward to the hills because it cut the wind.

This time, outbound to Greenfield, we just flew along and as Gintautas describes, it was very green with the sunlight putting it to it's best advantage. Even though I knew there was a lot of work ahead to return to Marina, the valley still looked so much better and I really enjoyed the leg far more than I would have thought.
