Mick,
Yes, I stopped in Ft. Bragg, 6 hours and 45 minutes worth. No kidding...
From the 400K I knew I would get sleepy at dark. And it wasn't clear my lower back would make it back to SFO. Already had a motel reservation but at that point there was no doubt stopping was the right thing to do. It was a no brainer. It's almost as if the reservation gave me permission to stop early. Appreciated the design of the open controls on the return trip.
Woke up at 1:40 after 4 solid hours sleep. Felt fabulous. Back on the road at 2:40am for my best leg of the trip, Ft. Bragg to Indian Creek. Those 45 miles took the same amount of time in daylight, slightly against the wind and with a sore back, as at night with a slight tailwind. I think when people talk about going slower at night, a good portion of that has to do with fatigue and/or sleepiness. Fully rested I can ride pretty fast in the dark. Also after sleeping my morale is better.
Ken Shoemaker and I finished together and he rode through the night to Cloverdale before hitting a motel. We intersected at Guerneville on the way back.

| Mick,
I believe Elaine Astrue did. She told me she had 4 hours sleep in Ft Bragg. She was at the finish when I arrived. I judged her pace to be about the same as mine, so it appears that her strategy was a success.
I'm sure she'd be happy to fill you in on the details.
