Dear all,

I am relatively new to cycling in the area (and actually back on the saddle after a multi-year break) and try to discover the area.

I covered a good part of the east-bay (I live in Oakland) and would like push farther while still keeping rides under ~125k.

Ideally, I'd like to wake up somewhat early, drive 30-40 min (or BART), easy parking, get an awesome breakfast (critical part) and ride.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Pierre

Marin country: this is my current area of interest
- Larkspur ferry landing, easy street parking, "rustic bakery" opens at 7AM only (great pudding), crepes at the farmer's market on the way back on Sat.

Napa: ?
Peninsula: ?
South Bay: ?

That is an easy one. Go to the Permanents Page of San Francisco Randonneurs website and download almost any cue sheet that catches your attention. The archive covers all bay area, the  listing has, starting point,  map link, elevation, distance and a short description:

Same for the club route archive http://www.sfrandonneurs.org/route-archive.htm

As an Oaklander, I'm pretty down on riding in Marin county.  It's a shlep to get out there, and once you're there, you have to put up with Marin cyclists.  It takes about 30 min to get up to Skyline, which is beautiful on its own, and leads to myriad other beautiful roads.  If you've ridden all the roads of interest, get some wide tires and explore some of the dirt riding in Redwood, Joaquin Miller, Tilden, Wildcat, or Briones.  It's my understanding that Joaquin Miller holds a record for being the nearest bike-legal singletrack to an urban center.

BART to SF (Embarcadero), breakfast at Ferry Building, ride over Golden Gate towards Mount Tam, descent to Stinson Beach, lunch in Bolinas, coffee in Point Reyes Station, back to SF.

Pierre,

I second the BART to SF approach.  Just remember to check BART times and bike legal times during the week.  It's good to have a BART app on your phone.

Here are some routes.  I hope you can see the strava stuff -- I dont' have those on map my ride.  Otherwise, contact me offline and I can help you with routes.

You can also ride the Lighthouse 200k brevet from the ferry building.  It's not too much extra mileage.  If you want to stick to 200k you could probably skip the out and back up to Marshall Store from Pt. Reyes station.

Have fun!

Ann

http://ridewithgps.com/users/9821/routes  45 mile loop to the larkspur ferry.  Hawk''s Hill/Headlands is extra, but it's one of the best parts.  You could add a trip out to the coast, too
http://app.strava.com/activities/42180423 63 miles from ferry bldg to Stinson, back via Bofax/Seven Sisters, through Mill Valley to Sausalito (eat at Fish!) and back to Ferry building
http://app.strava.com/activities/36994388 south from daly city. planet of the apes, higgins, purisima, tunitas.  cal train in RWC (WARNING:  dirt/singletrack on Planet of the Apes!)
http://app.strava.com/activities/3834752 lighthouse from Sausalito (you'd have to add 30 miles for the ride there and back to the ferry bldg)

Why not check out some bike clubs in the area? I'm sure some people on this list know of some good ones in the Oakland area. You would get to know the local roads and meet many interesting people as well.

Local clubs include oaklandyellowjackets.org and grizz.org .  Route sheets on their sites, including "away" rides that start a short drive or BART trip away.

BART to SF or Walnut Creek (Diablo) are great options.

Plenty of coffee shops most places, eh? :)

Check out San Francisco Bay Trail online. From Oakland you can Bart to different parts and ride for the day or Bart one way and ride back or just go out your door and get on the trail. I just rode a 50 miler from Oakland to the Dumbarton bridge and about 40 was on paths without cars.
