I'm building up a new wheel with a dynamo hub.  I've already paid for those parts; they are on order now.  But, I haven't purchased an LED headlight yet and would appreciate your opinions on which light to purchase.  I'll be driving it with a SON Delux dynamo.  I'm also interested in installing a USB port for charging 5V electrodoohickees.

Hm, I wonder if I could hack my Niterider 650 to be dynamo driven?

Thanks in advance,

Eric

You want the IQ2 Luxos U, full stop:

http://www.starbike.com/p/Busch-M%FCller-LUMOTEC-IQ2-LUXOS-5251-en
(***in stock here right now!!***)

Bright, wide beam, and built-in USB charger. They're flying off of
the shelves. I've been running this for a couple of weeks, driven off
of an SP dynamo, and it's absolutely the dream light for me.

Hm, mine was 142.79E from xxcycle.

Compare to, say, Tout Terrain The Plug II + Cyo. With that option,
you're looking at:

o Less light output
o Less effective beam pattern
o More bits to install and wire up
o Recommended charging *or* lighting, not both
o More expensive

IQ2 for the win. :)

(Plus, I'm wondering whether you can install the Tout Terrain with a
carbon steerer that needs the special internal plug?)

I have also been thinking about Luxos U, especially for the built in USB charger. I have a Cyo on my commute bike and it does a great job of illuminating just the road surface. I found out that this does not work well for me out in desolate country roads, where I feel like  On my rando bike I have a Supernova E3 Triple, which has a pretty uniform pattern, resulting in half the light illuminating the trees and the sky. I really enjoy riding with it out in the country roads, where I have seen deer, foxes skunks and even flying owls. I am pretty sure I would see none of these with a Cyo (and maybe the same for Luxos). I am on the fence on whether I should change.

BTW, I did ride with Greg and his Luxos light Saturday night and I was able to observe the two lights side by side. The E3 Triple gives a lot more light in the descents, and the more light in general. But the Luxos has a very uniform pattern with no hot spots, so I might have preferred it if my eyes were not adjusted to the brighter spots.

I pulled the trigger on the Luxos U, and just like that, it's already in the mail (according to the seller).
Between the new wheel and the new headlight, my bike just got a lot more expensive - yikes!  But, I'm looking forward to building my first wheel and not having to worry about batteries dying during long rides in the dark.

Thanks for your responses,

Eric.

When descending with my Cyo, it was pretty much a necessity to "fill
in" corners with my Princeton EOS helmet light. To my pleasant
surprise, this need was nearly eliminated with the IQ2.

Model IQ2 179E? I cannot find it anywhere for sale. Yet.
140 output should be pretty good.

Oops! I thought you were complaining about a price of 179 Euros.

Instead, you were asking about the "E" version of this "model 179" light!

The 140lux "E" version is for "E-bikes" with giant batteries and
motors. It's not for dynohubs.
