Paul,

SVC is now saying that the entire library must be pulled by the end of
the year, unless the conversion to Gen 3 is mostly done. I quote:

"The ticking time clock is to remove the generation 2s, not replace
them. You can take as long as you want to replace them. But they
really should all go away by the end of the year. (Don't take that as
a fatal deadline. We'll talk about how fast things are going in a
month and see how it goes. If you're replacing 12 ships a month we may
let all the second generation expire to encourage you to get busy
doing more conversions. If you're doing 200 per month we may let you
run the project out. "

We all know SVC is capable of being dramatic and bombastic, but taking
his words at face value, this was my reply:

"So if this isn't done fast enough, SFBOL becomes crippleware by the
end of the year?

Guess I won't be renewing my subscription then... no point if I can't use it.

This will have the side effect of basically killing online campaigns.

Why this rush to eliminate Generation 2s? They're already out there.
The rush should be to get Generation 3 ready so that NEW SSDs can be
uploaded.

Pulling the existing library will just kill SFBOL. "

Since we all know how well SVC tolerates dissent, I expect to be
deleted/sanctioned for this comment.

But Paul, as your long-time customer/subscriber, I meant what I said
to SVC. This will turn SFBOL into crippleware and I will not renew my
subscription. Frankly, I will not buy any future ADB projects either.
But, and I don't know how much control SVC has versus what you have,
please resist this mandate, it will force me off of SFBOL and out of
the hobby. This will lose you my patronage - not out of spite, but
out of inability to use your service in any meaningful way. In short,
it is a loss of the excellent service your company has, so far,
provided. I would expect those with year-long subscriptions that
extend beyond this "deadline" to expect refunds for loss of service.
Fortunately, I guess, my sub ends in November... so at least I have
the option of just not renewing, as unhappy an outcome as that is.

Respectfully,
-Dale McKee

I will add that, when I say "resist this mandate", I do not mean to
resist the upgrade to Gen3 SSDs - that seems inevitable - but rather
resist the library being pulled before the conversion is complete.

I think the better approach is to just get it done.  My goal is five minutes per ship to convert and I will show how to do it. Also, if the gifs are pulled but the defs kept, we'll get text only ssds that can still be imported.  That way if you need a ship but it isn't there in new format, it's still just five minutes.

Also, I don't think svc will insist on pulling ssds if progress is being made.

Look with a flick of a switch I could make all if the ship definitions text only. ( I would want to improve the support for text-based SSDs,first though )

But I really would like to avoid that. It would make that client a tournament only platform for SFB.

And I agree with you that SVC will not shut it down if he sees progress.
