+1.5 (me and Chris until he has to ditch us for his job)

...though I don't think we'll be biking together b/c I'm still too slow :(
...maybe I should leave early so if I get a flat there will be someone behind me!

I'm supposed to be riding in tomorrow; I hurt my ankle yesterday so I'm only 50/50 as to whether or not I'll be riding - if I do, I'll keep a mellow pace with you, Heather.

+1 You people seem ok.  Especially the one with the devil child.  I guess I am game for a ride with y'all.

In. Depending if I make it onto my trainer tonight i'll either be doing intervals on the ride or recovering. Looks like probably the former.

Heather,
My ankle hurts SO BAD. I think I'm going to the doctor tomorrow. Its 3x as big as the regular ankle. In this case, more is not better. :( Aka no riding for me. Sorry!

Welp, I'm glad I found this before heading out in the morning: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tedk/4094109947/
Fortunately I had another wheel available.

oh no worries, Colleen! Feel better soon!

Also, on my 45% solo adventure I discovered that the cyclocross section of doom is under construction for the next 2-3 days, which means we gotta detour.

yes and no.  the normal BTN approach is closed, but you can follow the chainlink fence around to the left and get to the bridge by the waterway.  it's not too bad and is rideable if you feel adventurous.

so the detour is not required.

Yeah just take your first right and either carry your bike across if you're afraid, or just ride through dirt for about a minute and you're at the bridge again. Easy peasy.

does anyone on this massive list of people have any experience with a tri-malleolar fracture? i got one (plus a fourth fracture in the same spot at the same time) three years ago and had to have two surgeries for it. that's what's causing *the pains* right now. if anyone has some experience recovering from one of these i'd like to hear about it.

oh yeah... the guy said there was some other way around but I hadn't investigated (I just asked nicely if I could go through the normal way since they hadn't started digging their giant ditch yet)

Did you ask the guy if the results of the construction will permanently change our ability to go through that area?

I heard some good things about this guy:
http://www.pamf.org/sports/staff/saxena.html

and he looks pretty awesome when you check out his site - writes about
cycling, for example. That being said, an SF2Ger went to him with her
achilles tendonitis and she was very unhappy with the results. Maybe
she can tell you more.

I think if I had an issue I'd still talk to him though.

I broke my foot three years ago (several broken bones and tore my lizfranc) and Saxena was the surgeon that fixed me up. I had a super positive experience. One thing that I really liked was that he definitely seemed to take an athlete's look at things - i.e. his objective was to get me back and active as soon as possible - none of that "oh, sorry, you should just avoid running/cycling from now on" crap.

One thing I did feel from him though is that there was a definite snobbery with regards to the athleticism of the patient and interestingness of the injury. It felt that he was interested because I was intense about my sports and that my foot was pretty messed up. I've heard of several instances of people going to him and him basically not being interested. So, all in all, I'd say if he's interested in what you have, Saxena is amazing - if not, find someone else :).

I went to Dr. King (http://www.pamf.org/sports/staff/king.html) also at PAMF after I crashed last year and was experiencing pain in both legs for months after the accident.  It turned out to be the awesome combination of Patellar and Achilles tendinitis which he diagnosed right away and had me back on the bike pain free within 3 weeks (after nearly 3 months of cranky cranky pain when i cycled or as much as ran down a few flights of stairs).

He does have a detached tableside manner but I was completely happy with the results and wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Dr. King did all four of my surgeries (one R knee, two L knee, one wrist - all race crash related) and I also recommend him highly. Steve is right though - his bedside manner is poor. But if you need surgery who cares (you're unconscious!) - you want the best hands in the business. He's also athlete minded. And he's not knife happy like alot of surgeons - he'll push for exercize or PT solutions first.

Dr. King properly diagnosed a bruised rotator cuff a few years ago, after other orthos had misdiagnosed the injury as a broken bone or cuff tear.  He prescribed stretch band exercises to restrengthen the recovering muscles.  After a few months of that, and the soft tissue swelling having subsided, my shoulder was fine again.
My impression was that he takes an interest in studying each injury and recovery to learn from, as much as that he's doing business.
hth,
Barry
