Hey all. I've ridden with some of you a few times, most of you never.
But I have followed the recent discussions. I'd like to call a 12/18
NRLB Bayway. I can sweep (if needed). My preference is a 6:15 RRR
(just because I know it can be a long ride in when sweeping, which
I've done on a couple of occasions). The one caveat is that I'll be
breaking from the pack on University, bound for Stanford. Oh yeah, I
run a 584mm wheelset, so bring your own tubes!

Any Style-III riders, lurkers, newbies et al., are highly encouraged
to come rolling out of the woodwork. The weather should be refreshing.
Also, I never sprint. And even if I did, you would probably not
notice.

C'mon, it's the Last Working Friday of the Year!

+1 or more, depending on how many people I can motivate out of bed at that hour. I plan on waiting at sandbox on Cortland. Can someone let me know/add thec...@google.com to latitude/... so I can see when you guys are leaving?
I'm going all the way to Google and can sweep. It would be great if we can leave on time to increase the chance of getting breakfast. It sucks to be at the end of a long ride and just miss the food.

Try being at the end of a long ride and having 10 miles left to go,
and there was never any food to begin with. And ya wonder why
Valleywag snarks on The Big G... ;)

Dude you're always welcome to stop for breakfast!!

Post-ride massages, however, are for employees only.

Agreed, let's have ourselves a merry little xmas and make the Yuletide gay.  All ye non-G types are welcome to come by for breakfast tomorrow.  SInce we're going early, it should work out.

whatever yuletide is, i'm in for it tomorrow as well.  who else shall ride both ways tomorrow?  remember the fatness the holidays entails.

Hey Faye,

I dunno if it makes getting up at an absurd time any easier but if so
I'll have a Pain Au Chocolat from Sandbox waiting for you if you make
it.

Wow, Steve, that offer is hard to pass up, plus I would really love to
see you before I disappear for a few weeks. But right now I am soooo
tired and have to now do the work I blew off to ride HMBW today, so I
have a feeling I wont be able to roll until closer to 7. And I'll be
slow for the same reason, so I prob. wont even catch you guys. Sniff.
Maybe if you have 3 flats. Not that I am wishign for that. Anyway,
maybe I can catch people at Benders...
But I do want a report on those pain au chocolat and the bakery in general!
I have not forgotten about the BakeryWay project...

yeah, I want to wheel suck. Does that mean I can stop pedalling and
take a nap? That sounds really good. But I better listen to Andy and

The bakery in general is awesome. I've been there every day this week
for breakfast except today.

I don't particularly like Pain au Chocolat but I'll take one for the
team and try to choke one down maybe at midway.

Done. I think. First-time user. If not, I can also shoot you a text
when we roll if you e-mail me your number. I'll try to stick with the
6:15 roll-out as I need to be in at decent hour, as well. Just fyi,
I'll be riding a black-framed road bike with an orange messenger bag
strapped down to a front rack.

Okay, 6:15 RRR it is. Also, last call for all of you riders out there
that have been previously opting out due to Style-II anxieties. It'll
be a good chance to meet and make a New Year's resolution to start
calling our own rides more often :)

Thank you all for a spirited, convivial, and respectfully paced ride!
For you lurkers out there (if there are any, really), 12 strong rolled
out of Ritual by 6:20, which was a feat in and of itself. We added
four more along Cortland, and picked up a part-wayer at the break
spot. I'm happy to report that for the duration of the ride, the NRLB
rule was in full effect. Furthermore, the front of the pack kept the
pace agreeable to those riding towards the rear. We did lose one rider
along the way, unfortunately. It'd be nice to hear how he's doing, if
anyone has knowledge of the situation.

In any event, that was a nice way to host the Final Friday Friendly
Frolic of the Year. I look forward to the FFFF of 2010.

Best,
Lee

Did something happen on the path just before Willow? We rolled by
really late after staring at like 7 and having 2 flats, and I didn't
fully twig that it was friends who were stopped there and was more
focused on the copcar and rolled by too fast...

Anyway, hope everything is ok!

I think I found an EPA route adjustment that could work (it is almost
the same). I took the usual turn and was planning to do the usual old
route because I'm not gonna let last week change my life, but then I
decided that if I continued on the road we make the first right onto,
that it looked like a straight shot and I figured I bet it goes
through to Bay. It did. I looked on a street sign, and that road is
called Forham. So my proposed EPA route is:
left off of Univeristy as usual (first one I think), then make that
first right as usual onto Forham. Then isntead of zigzagging left
etc., stay on forham, left at the T at Bay, then normal route.

pros:
-avoids hoody corner where we have all had issues
-avoids really horrible pavement on university
-forham is a wide street and I personally do not think it looks hoody
-making the same left as usual off of university- not great esp. when
solo, but I still think it is easier than doing so further down once
you start hitting the lights and traffic bunches up.

the only con is that making a left onto Bay requires a full stop and
careful looking, and then you better watch for nitwits who drive
minivans and don't turn on their blinkers but decide to make right
turns at that intersectino where you would now go striaght and we used
to turn left, but those evil types are everywhere anyway.

Andy got tangled up with Lider on the bike path to Sun, and to be on the safe side the EMTs were called out.  Once they arrived (in like 12 seconds), the bulk of the party rolled on, figuring we were no longer of much use to Andy... and pretty hungry.  Got to G at 9:40 and due to the majority of googlerians bailing early for vacation, we gorged on piles of delicious vittles.

Andy, how's it going my friend?  bloody knee, rattled cage, and dinged up bike is all I hope.

(btw, Faye, your route is fine.  EPA being a grid, there are several choices to avoid Illinois Rd, aka the 'hood.  Fordham is alright, tho I should mention that a local was shot/killed *while riding a bike* one night last year...)

Thanks, all.

AFAICT, here's what went down. We were in a paceline doing about 20
on Bayfront Expressway, and less than half a mile from the Sun campus.
I think: Lider got a rock in the face and hit the brakes, Shoumen
slowed & swerved to avoid him, and I got my front wheel tangled in his
rear.

I think I went over my handlebars - I'm told there was some
combination of a rolling somersault and an airborne bike. I really
wish someone had a video running. I saw the ground coming up at me
and then an awful scraping sound in my helmet. When I was done
sliding, I decided to remain laying down exactly where I fell, which
unfortunately turned out to be sort of a culvert, leaving me facing up
but laying downhill with all of the blood rushing to my head.

Lider called 911, someone else found my shades, and lots of people
kept asking me what day it was for some reason - can't you read the
subject line, it's 12/18!!! I pulled out my phone to double check
what day it was and where we were, and suddenly nobody was talking
about my injuries any more. Yes, everyone, it was a magical secret
phone from Google, and it's filled with love and ponies.

The cops & paramedics came really quickly, which was lucky because
they quickly assessed my condition as "you're gonna need a lot of
ibuprofin but you can get up now." At work I showered, cleaned up,
and counted the bandaids and I have 4 hamburgers on my legs, one on my
arm, and one on my finger. Not terrible considering.

My right brifter is shot, so my bike is semi rideable but not
shiftable and the rear brake is dragging a bit. A couple of minor
accessories broke but nothing else really. Shoumen lost a couple of
spokes but claims that it's no biggie because he's a wheel building
machine.

I'm of course terribly disappointed to learn that there was plenty of
breakfast! Thanks to Shoumen, Steve, and Brett for sticking around
for the INTERMINABLE wait for the FRAKKING IDIOT taxi driver who
couldn't find us.

Have a great barway, all, and see you in January.

once we figured Andy was probably ok in our unprofessional opinion it was time to shoot some pics.  here are probably some of the least flattering pics ever taken of Andy.

"you fell off your bike into a ditch? HAHA!"

i'm glad you're ok, andy!

btw - i hate that question of what day it is. if i don't normally know
it, what makes you think i would after i crash? actually, come to
think of it, if i _do_ know maybe that's when you should start

Apologies to Andy for my contribution to his accident :-(

And to Shauman for his wheel. Did you end up taking a cab when the wheel feel apart even more?

Lesson learned: always ride with sunglasses.

Here are my two photos from the incident:
