Try being at the end of a long ride and having 10 miles left to go,
and there was never any food to begin with. And ya wonder why
Valleywag snarks on The Big G... ;)

Post-ride massages, however, are for employees only.

In from Sandbox. I just have to be sure to be on time this time!

I dunno if it makes getting up at an absurd time any easier but if so
I'll have a Pain Au Chocolat from Sandbox waiting for you if you make
it.

I don't particularly like Pain au Chocolat but I'll take one for the
team and try to choke one down maybe at midway.

In any event, that was a nice way to host the Final Friday Friendly
Frolic of the Year. I look forward to the FFFF of 2010.
Best,
Lee
Anyway, hope everything is ok!
I think I found an EPA route adjustment that could work (it is almost
the same). I took the usual turn and was planning to do the usual old
route because I'm not gonna let last week change my life, but then I
decided that if I continued on the road we make the first right onto,
that it looked like a straight shot and I figured I bet it goes
through to Bay. It did. I looked on a street sign, and that road is
called Forham. So my proposed EPA route is:
left off of Univeristy as usual (first one I think), then make that
first right as usual onto Forham. Then isntead of zigzagging left
etc., stay on forham, left at the T at Bay, then normal route.
pros:
-avoids hoody corner where we have all had issues
-avoids really horrible pavement on university
-forham is a wide street and I personally do not think it looks hoody
-making the same left as usual off of university- not great esp. when
solo, but I still think it is easier than doing so further down once
you start hitting the lights and traffic bunches up.
the only con is that making a left onto Bay requires a full stop and
careful looking, and then you better watch for nitwits who drive
minivans and don't turn on their blinkers but decide to make right
turns at that intersectino where you would now go striaght and we used
to turn left, but those evil types are everywhere anyway.

AFAICT, here's what went down. We were in a paceline doing about 20
on Bayfront Expressway, and less than half a mile from the Sun campus.
I think: Lider got a rock in the face and hit the brakes, Shoumen
slowed & swerved to avoid him, and I got my front wheel tangled in his
rear.
I think I went over my handlebars - I'm told there was some
combination of a rolling somersault and an airborne bike. I really
wish someone had a video running. I saw the ground coming up at me
and then an awful scraping sound in my helmet. When I was done
sliding, I decided to remain laying down exactly where I fell, which
unfortunately turned out to be sort of a culvert, leaving me facing up
but laying downhill with all of the blood rushing to my head.
Lider called 911, someone else found my shades, and lots of people
kept asking me what day it was for some reason - can't you read the
subject line, it's 12/18!!! I pulled out my phone to double check
what day it was and where we were, and suddenly nobody was talking
about my injuries any more. Yes, everyone, it was a magical secret
phone from Google, and it's filled with love and ponies.
The cops & paramedics came really quickly, which was lucky because
they quickly assessed my condition as "you're gonna need a lot of
ibuprofin but you can get up now." At work I showered, cleaned up,
and counted the bandaids and I have 4 hamburgers on my legs, one on my
arm, and one on my finger. Not terrible considering.
My right brifter is shot, so my bike is semi rideable but not
shiftable and the rear brake is dragging a bit. A couple of minor
accessories broke but nothing else really. Shoumen lost a couple of
spokes but claims that it's no biggie because he's a wheel building
machine.
I'm of course terribly disappointed to learn that there was plenty of
breakfast! Thanks to Shoumen, Steve, and Brett for sticking around
for the INTERMINABLE wait for the FRAKKING IDIOT taxi driver who
couldn't find us.
Have a great barway, all, and see you in January.

The dark-haired cop was cute. See where I made her laugh?
Thanks for the keepsakes!
--Andy
"you fell off your bike into a ditch? HAHA!"
i'm glad you're ok, andy!
btw - i hate that question of what day it is. if i don't normally know
it, what makes you think i would after i crash? actually, come to
think of it, if i _do_ know maybe that's when you should start
worrying.
