Hi Jess, Amar, and others,

Amar's workaround was incredibly clever but ther are much, much easier
ways to do this using ESRI's spatial analyst.

I would start with a proper DEM, and then overlay the streets
polylines. (Try starting with the NED, national elevation dataset.)
This will create a 3D PolylineMZ layer, which you can then run all

I'm a first-year student in a GIS class working on a bike project in
San Francisco, and wanted to see if you could lend some insight. I
thought it would be interesting to do a suitability analysis of the
slopes in SF and compare them to the existing SF bike plan. I've
gotten some data off the SF GOV website, including the contour & roads

Well, it seems like Google has just rendered both our effort, and
MTC's effort, unnecessary and obsolete.
That's fine.
All we really wanted was a functional bicycle trip planner. As long as
Google stays on top of the process of constantly updating their
bicycle routes via crowd-sourcing, and if they make a few more

I saw that this morning too. Agreed, it may obviate our efforts.
I'm impressed. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good. It took me
about a month and 7 tries to find the best route from my old house to
the community pool. Google found it in about 0.1 seconds.
I can’t find a legend (?), but it looks like dark green is a bike

Yep :)
Although it will eventually render our homebrewed planners obsolete, I'm
still psyched to see this finally launch.
Have you guys tried it? What do you think? It needs some work in terms of
features/design (no slope cutoff? in SF?) but the scale of the problem
they've tackled is truly remarkable.

Hi all,
I was finally able to talk to the folks at MTC. We had a hard time
scheduling a meeting and ended up doing it over the phone. I talked to
Susan Heinrich, their bike and pedestrian coordinator, who is also
involved with 511.org, and Kearey Smith, a planner who is involved
with GIS and who is overseeing development of their bike route

I tried to paste the diff here and got an error saying "We were unable
to post your message. If you believe this is an error, please contact

I tried submitting with "/trunk" as the branch path, and got an error
saying "Branch path must start with '/branches'". Then I tried "/
branches/trunk" and got an error saying "Specified branch is not a
valid directory.".

What does that mean???
I tried submitting the form with the default, but it wouldn't let me,
so I tried entering "/branches/live". At least that is what I think I
did. I don't remember for sure.
I am about to try your suggestions.

Hi Elias,
I took a look at the code review. For some reason it's diffing your changes
against branches/live, when it should be diffing against branches/live.
What did you put in the code review request field "Branch Path:" ? Did you
leave it as the default '/branches' ? Maybe it filled in the first

I clicked on that link, filled out the form to describe my changes,
and attached the files I changed. I am guessing that I did it right.
Is there any way I can know what is going on with the changes, and
when or if they are approved to check into trunk?

Great to hear you've made some improvements. The javascript was
mostly written by me in a hurry. I started using jQuery but as you
can see from the code I was sort of making it up as I went along.
Feel free to reformat in a reasonable way.
