The title describes most of it. The only thing that I would quarrel
with is Seth's comment
"...But the time period is deceptive. Actual search time added
together amounts to only 18 months, Shostak said, hardly enough to
conclude that our galactic kin are either not there or are not
interested."
His comment implies that the search the entire search space has been
examined for a total of 18 months observing time over a 40 year
period. The reality is that most of the search space has only been
observed for seconds of time, and giant swaths of radio and light
frequencies and the sky itself have not even been examined.
