Hi, i'm using Session Buddy for a while. For some reason i'm on old OS which doesn't receive any new updates of chrome web browser.(Currently on latest available official version which is 109)

Sometime ago (i dont remember exact datetime period), inside of main.html page appeared yellow tittle/bar with text -

Session Buddy requires a newer browser version . Learn more.

which redirects on that page -> https://sessionbuddy.com/browser-compatibility/

So i read with attention, but didn't understood the idea. Can it be described more in depth with explanations ??

1. "Due to upcoming changes in Chrome, Session Buddy now requires Chrome (or Edge) version 110 or newer." - ok, how it affects older version of Session Buddy on older revision of Chrome? Version 110 was released at 7 february 2023. So in other words, current version of Session Buddy from google extension store requires minimum 110 Version or what?

2. "You MUST upgrade Chrome (or Edge) to at least version 110 before March 1, 2024 to avoid being stuck with an old and unsupported version of Session Buddy.

If you wait until after March 1, 2024 to upgrade your browser, you will lose all of your Session Buddy saved sessions when you upgrade
." - but why? Any reason for such weird incompatibility? So e.g. if i will migrate to newer OS on april 2024(or later), than it will be impossible to reuse older backups of Session Buddy ? What is the reason and why that migration step can't be reused in later ?(after march 1 2024)

3. "Also note that while existing installs of Session Buddy will continue to run on versions of Chrome older than 110, it will soon become impossible to install or re-install Session Buddy without first upgrading to Chrome 110 or newer." - when soon(?) it will become impossible to install older version of Session Buddy or re-install, could you explain please?

Kind Regards.

A new version of Session Buddy (v4) is being released in about a month (around March 1). This new version requires Chrome v110. Users of older versions of Chrome are being encouraged to upgrade their Chrome BEFORE Session Buddy v4 is released so that they can take advantage of automatic data migration from v3 to v4.

After v4 is released:

If you have not upgraded to Chrome v110, Session Buddy v3 will continue to work and will not automatically upgrade to v4.

However:

1. You will be using an unsupported product

2. You will not be able to re-install Session Buddy until you upgrade to Chrome v110 or newer

3. If and when you do upgrade Chrome, and Session Buddy therefore becomes eligible for upgrade to v4, your Session Buddy data may not be automatically migrated because of database APIs that may have been deprecated by Chrome in the interim. You have 2 options to deal with this:

a. Prepare by backing up Session Buddy v3 data regularly from now until you upgrade (click gear menu, then "Back up"). Session Buddy v4 will allow you to import a backup created with SB v3. The downside of this approach is that you must manually back up every time you save a session or make any changes to ensure you've preserved the latest state of your data.

b. Alternatively, after Session Buddy upgrades to v4 and you notice that it did not automatically migrate your data, use the data migration tool to manually transfer your data. This tool will allow you to generate a v4 import file from a v3 database file. The tool will be made available at a later date. Its availability will be announced in this forum.

Hopefully that helps to clear things up. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Hans

2. You will not be able to re-install Session Buddy until you upgrade to Chrome v110 or newer -
but why? It will be auto-deleted each time after installation(?), since Google Chrome forces to update extension on manifest V4? (how it was with V2 / V3). It will be marked with error "Such extension violates rules of Chrome" ?

3.  If and when you do upgrade Chrome, and Session Buddy therefore becomes eligible for upgrade to v4, your Session Buddy data may not be automatically migrated because of database APIs that may have been deprecated by Chrome in the interim. You have 2 options to deal with this: -

hold on, isn't that Session Buddy under the hood has own SQLite database? So what is the concrete problem for that incompatibility? I'm fully confused right now. Isn't version of SB -> 3.6.9 with already V3 manifest? So what is difference between SB extensions on older Chrome version (like mine -> 109) in comparison with newer ones (Chrome 110 and so on) ?

- but how that is possible?

2. why?

Because only SB v4 (which requires at least Chrome 110) will be available on the web store.

What is the concrete problem for that incompatibility?

SB v3 is using 2 things that are being deprecated soon: Manifest v2 and Web SQL Database.

SB v4 will be using Manifest v3 and IndexedDB instead of Web SQL Database.

online migration tool... how that is possible?

It will use a 3rd-party library capable of reading SQLite database files and convert files locally (file is not uploaded to the server).

Hi, so extension works smoothly on old version of chrome 109 . The only thing that is not working is tab count, otherwise its fully ok. Then why you made "alert" with urgently update on newest version? :\

Then why you made "alert" with urgently update on newest version?

Because of the Chrome deprecations mentioned earlier.
