What is Service Learning?

Service-learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities. This experiential method gets students out of the classroom and into the schools and community at large. Students learn to use their academic knowledge to address real needs.
The purposes of service-learning are:
* Improved grades
* Increased attendance
* Structured time for students to reflect by thinking, discussing and writing
* Extended learning beyond the classroom and into the community
* Fosters a sense of caring for others
* Develops higher self esteem
* Fosters a sense of Civic Responsibility
