Neriah Lewis, who is thought to be deranged in passing the field of Mr.
William Roach, dismounted from his horse and opened fire at Mr. Roach's
sons, who were at work.
John Roach, aged about 20, was shot twice and instantly killed. After
the shooting Lewis got on his horse and flourishing his pistol in the
air, rode off. He went immediately to his father's house, drove all of
the family out of doors and locked himself in the building. As soon as
the news of the killing reached Franklin a posse went in search of
Lewis, and tracked him to the homestead. He refused to surrender, and
fired several times at the posse from the windows. The posse retreated
a short distance and sent back to Franklin for additional men. Before
the latter arrived a solitary shot was heard in the house, and when the
building was entered Lewis was found almost lifeless, having sent a
bullet through his body. He can not survive.
