Hello all,

There is an effort to have dedicated selenium question/answer site on Stack Exchange at - http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4693/selenium

Stack Exchange sites are used by myriad of users and are famous for their snazzy look and user friendly features.

Once you click on http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4693/selenium you would see Commit button towards Left Hand Side of page.

All you have to do is click Commit button, login using open id (Google/Yahoo etc) and you are done.

Show your support towards world's **most ** famous open source testing framework by committing to http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4693/selenium

Thanks

Updates from area51 site. To be counted as valid commit you need to
first log in to site. Click on login button which is available towards
the top section of page. You can login using Google/Yahoo id. Now
Commit to selenium proposal on stack exchange site. And last step is
to confirm you email address.
I have posted all these steps on my blog here -
http://seleniumsoftwaretesting.blogspot.com/2011/03/did-you-support-selenium-question-site.html
Have a look at it to see how you could support selenium site.

Thanks

Thanks Alp,

Do spread the word in you network and help us reach 100% commit.
We badly need community support to have this site materialize.

Thanks

The problem which we are facing with Google Groups are multitudinous,
to cite couple of things in favor of Stack Exchange site -

# As soon as you type in Title for question in Stack Exchange site, it
shows related question. This makes it easy to find if such question is
already asked. No such feature with Google Groups.
# Being able to tag your question in Stack Exchange site which is not
possible with Google Groups. This makes searching on such tagged
questions absolutely easy. No similar feature with Google groups.
# Formatting of question(bold, italic, hyperlink etc), distinguishing
code block from rest of the post to make it stand out are excellent
features of Stack Exchange site. Google groups just can not with stand
these.
# You earn reputation for every answers which is marked as right, this
gives you more credibility on site. Again Google Groups lacks this.
# Being able to thumbs up or down a specific question or answer, and
in fact close it eventually if it is off topic for site. No similar
feature on Google Groups.

And there must be many more which I might not be aware of.

Most disheartening fact is, Its been nine months since this proposal
has been available and we have more than 4000 users alone on Selenium-
User Google group but there have not been even 500 commits on area51
site. Certainly we at SeleniumHQ have not done good enough marketing
to attract users towards area51 site.

That's an understatement. I have been on this mailing list for 16
months, and have created a page on the one Selenium wiki I knew about.
But this thread is the first time I recall hearing about area51. I will
try to find time to look at it once my current work task is completed.

Now you see how bad we have been in publicizing area51 proposal of
selenium.
By the way Support page of SeleniumHQ lists it and you might like to
see -

b/w do commit to site if you have not and spread the word.

Are all of the (old) question and answer threads here on google groups
going to be transferred to area51?

Excellent question and I don't have any answer now.
I have asked it on meta exchange and would keep you posted.

Thank you...so it sounds like at this point at least the google group
data will not be moved. Could I please ask then what are the future
plans for the selenium users google group after the forum is moved to
StackExchange?

What is most likely to happen to the selenium google group?
A) Keep it open, up and running just like it is now
B) Keep it open for search, but not allow new posts (a few months)
C) Keep it open for search, but not allow new posts (a year or so)
D) Immediately shut-down or lock-out access to the selenium google
group
E) Some combination of the above or something completely different

Thanks, --Steve

Hey Steve,

I am still exploring data migration possibilities with Stack Exchange
site and certainly we don't want to loose any data.
I had similar thread posted on Sel-Dev group -
http://groups.google.com/group/selenium-developers/browse_thread/thread/7dac3f00f775aac
And Patrick said that we can decide on how to best use it once we have
it.

None of us want to loose any data and when we moved from Clear Space
(Do you remember Clear Space?) to Google Groups we migrated all the
answers here.
I am still following with meta stack exchange site on this and I hope
there would be one viable solution acceptable to all us.

Also I am not in position to comment on option (great options indeed)
you have provided as it would be collective decision by all Selenium
enthusiasts including you and I :-)

Thanks for showing curiosity and please do spread the word on
http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/4693/selenium in your n/w.

Thanks

Thanks Tarun, for answering my questions. I just committed, the
area51 site looks great. Do you happen to know if area51 will send
daily email summaries like google groups does? (sorry last
question : ) --Steve

Hey Steve, Thank for your Commit.
And you can drop any question any time on this thread. I am not going
to let this thread die soon :D

Apropos of email notification I am aware of two work flows on Stack
Exchange -

1. When you ask a question you could mark a check box for email to be
sent to when ever there is a response on it.

2. Given the tagging feature of Stack Exchange, You could also ask for
mails to be delivered only for question with "that" tag. Consider our
site is live tomorrow and "super user" decides that we should let user
tag a question with "Selenium Java Driver". In this case you can ask
for all the questions about "Selenium Java Driver" to be mailed to
you.

Is not it cool?

How do I set it up to get all posts emailed to me automatically like the
current server does? I don't have time to chase all over the Web for
support forums. If it doesn't show up in my mailbox, I won't ever see it
unless I have a reason to search for it via Google. The only way I read
the current forum is via email.

Hey Bob,

As I mentioned you can specify the sort of email you want to receive.
Say if you interested in only "RC" (provided we allow this tag)
questions than you would receive mail for only those question which
are tagged with "RC"
And how to do this, very easy. just click on a tag and subscribe.

Bob don't worry, migration is not some thing which would happen
overnight and we would definitely take all users in confidence before
moving ahead.

b/w have you ever used Stackoveflow site, if not then try today. You
would soon forget Google Groups or any other forum.

Tarun,

I don't do Google Groups, nor do I do any other forum. I only read
email. If I cannot subscribe to all threads via email, I won't be
participating. FULL STOP.

@Bob Since you shared your thoughts on another thread I am not going
to comment on those here.

For those who are worried on lost questions/search here are the
thoughts from Ivo who is super user on area51
(http://discuss.area51.stackexchange.com/users/16/ivo-flipse)

He says -

"You should mention that not only are question easily found on the
site, Google indexes us like crazy. So if they simply search on Google
chances are they will see our content on top. Besides they dont have
to ditch Google Group entirely, since we won't cater to discussions,
if they want those have them on GG"
