On the train in this morning I wrote up what I was thinking of when I
mention mimicking the plugin idea that Firebug has taken. You can see it
at http://adam.goucher.ca/?p=1324. I (obviously) can't think of anything
else the 'api' would need to provide, but there could be a scenario (or
multiple) that I haven't thought up yet.

I think an ideal first plugin (guinea pig) would be for handling
flash/flex. Patrick wrote up a nice summary earlier this week of the
current state of flash in Se at
http://blog.browsermob.com/2009/12/flash-and-flex-automation-options-using-selenium/.

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to say 'You know, this application I need
to automate has flash all over the place. I'll just go get the current
Flash Support plugin and start recording scripts'? I don't think this is
a complete sleep deprived delusion.

Hi Adam,

Your article is very intersting.

Have you seen this videos[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8S4Hl3VK1c ] ? It's the Helium plugin for Sel-IDE, I've already told you.

We find your ideas in the work we have done. As you can see in the video, we added a tab named "Helium", where we're able to interact with HTTP stream. If you want to test it, you can go to http://forge.serli.com/helium/.

With the XUL overlays and ids, you can easily find where your plugin needs to occur.

A Firefox extension can extend another, and may extend a certain version of it. I don't think that this mechanism must be changed on Sel-IDE, but it's only my opinion.

We need to examine the code of Selenium IDE and we must choose what will be exposed to any plugin.

I think we can discuss around this "pluginification" and give ideas to determine the best.

The pluginification will be one of the major developments of Sel-IDE and we agree on that, but not the priority.

Regards,

Jérémy and the SERLI R&D team
