I strongly recommend DropBox.com

But, ask a friend who uses DropBox for a referral, and both of you will get an extra
500 mb of cloud storage space, totaling   2.5 gigabyte.  Free.
(If you run a business, please buy a Pro account, to help them.)

Or, if no friend gives you a referral:
Use this link to sign up, you will get the extra bonus; and we will, as well, for
a volunteer working on a makerspace for Mars (but that is another topic).
(if that does not work, try:  http://db.tt/VbUHqaGF  )

Details:
A major advantage of DropBox.com compared to other cloud services, is that you
can access and modify files when off-line, or with a slow connection.
It does a good job of knowing which is the newest file (but does not try to merge).

An even more critical advantage:   we had TWO different cloud storage companies fail on us.
Both were paid services. One went bankrupt. The other case involved a rogue webmaster.
We had great difficulty reassembling the latest version of files.
With DropBox, all your files are stored on your own computer, so even in those
cases, you still have your files on your local disk.

p.s. I am not near S67, but subscribed because Casey S. and Chris were involved
with a 3D printer for Mars proposal.

[ Harley Pyles - suggest that your exchange student immediately write down everything
[   she can remember writing, in that paper she lost. The sooner the better.
[   Or, dictate to a friend or an audio recording.  It is hard to do, but helps you recover.   ]

thanks,

Hello Sector 67,

I am working with some exchange students from France this summer, one of whom is distraught over a broken flash drive. In short, she has a 30 page paper due Sunday and her only recent copy of the file was on the flash drive. Furthermore, it was her late father's flash drive and carries some sentimental value, but I think her main concern at this point is the word document.

We've tried it on windows and mac. On windows it recognizes that a device is connected but doesn't get any further. On mac nothing happens whatsoever; I can't find the directory with finder or terminal.

We took it to tech support here at UWW, and they attempted to use data recovery software of some sort (sorry I should have written its name down; I can find out if necessary) but this failed to work as well.

The chip itself is very accessible. There aren't any visible signs of damage on the chip, at least to me or the people at tech support.

Anyways, I told her I would shoot you an email because if anyone would know what to do at this point, its you folks.

Harley

I'll check out dropbox, can't hurt to have more cloud storage I guess. Currently I'm predominately using Google drive. It just went up to 15 GB for free.
