Davi will be hosting Go nights every Thursday at Sector67 if you're interested in learning Go, it's a very fun/addicting board game.  If you hate Go then bring your own friends/games o:-)

Hello Go players!

This fall we are starting a Go game night on the east side, Thursdays 7 to 10 at Sector67, 2100 Winnebago St.

All are welcome. Bring (portable) goban and stones if you have them. We'll have plenty of 9x9 boards.

Most of the folks getting this mailing are beginner to novice level (25 to 15 kyu).

Hope to see you this Thursday, 20 September, at 7:00. RSVP appreciated, but it's fine to just show up.

(Let me know if you'd rather not get these invitations.)

Nope, just show up and learn, it's very very easy to learn how to play, difficult/impossible to master.

Last Thursday we had a small group, and some challenging games.

We're on for this Thursday, 7 to 10. Please drop by if you're curious. Go is easy to learn, and lots of fun, especially in a group.

If you're looking for higher level play, the Madison Go Club meets Wednesday evenings at the UW Memorial Union.

Thanks to Jim R. and Simeon for 3D printing sample Go pieces, and to Chris for laser-cutting advice. I'm working on various ways of making inexpensive Go boards and playing pieces.

Hey Sectorites --

Are you interested in learning Go? It's the world's deepest board game. Takes minutes to learn, a lifetime to master. We'll be teaching and playing this Thursday 7 to 10 at Sector.

I made my own wood stain by boiling walnut hulls, and stained (half of) three sets of wooden game pieces. We have enough equipment now for at least 8 games. All we need is a few more players.

Come and stretch your brain in a different dimension!

What is the name of the multiplayer Go website Davi built? He told me at the Build Madison event, but I forget it now.
It's Go-*Something*

Thursday is Go night at Sector, 7 to 10. Come on out and bend your mind!

Last week three or four people learned the game, lit by a hastily-rigged battery-powered light. The power was off for an hour or so while MG&E repaired an arcing short on the pole outside.

This photo is from the week before. I believe it was black's move at this point. Whoever moves first here can win the game by more than 30 points. What should the next move be for black, or for white? (Use coordinates from the lower left corner.)

I'm certainly no go expert, but I love the idea of a go puzzle, so I'll at least give you a strawman argument to beat up on.  It seems to me the aliveness of the black group around 10,10 is the critical issue.  If I was black, I'd play at 12,6 to try and connect to the threatened group.  If I was white, I'd play at 13,8 and I think I can eventually capture the black group.

Very good, Scott! I believe those are the best moves. Just after I posted the photo, I realized I'd better have an answer ready, so I studied it some more, and realized it's harder than I thought!

Are there other first moves for black or white that can also force a win?

Using an SGF (Smart Game Format) Editor helps a lot to explore the game tree. I use CGoban, which also is a client program for playing online at KGS.

Davi,
Although I won't be able to play Go, I will be bringing in a group of Nissan Leaf electric car owners next Thursday. See you at Sector!

Howdy Sectorites!

Go game night continues at Sector tonight, 7 to 10. Seems there are a lot of activities scheduled for this evening, could be an interesting crowd.

Last week we had a good group, with a couple of pretty good players!

The handicap system in Go works really well to enable players of different levels to have evenly matched games. So you are sure to find someone to play against, whatever your level (unless you are a 5 dan player, who would have to give me a 12-stone handicap on the full board!).

Hope to see you soon. Bring friends!
