My car has recently started making some unpleasant noises. In addition to the slow CV joint failure I've been experiencing since I bought it, I now have a faint but persistent engine whine. I only need the car to last for another ~8,000 miles  / 24 months at which point I'll cheerfully sell it for parts, but I'm not sure what to until then.

Can anyone suggest an inexpensive shop for an inspection that'll tell me what's about to explode? (Submitting yourself with a cash bid is entirely acceptable.) Also, where's the best place around here to get CVs done cheaply? (ditto.)

CV Pros on E Wash does free estimates and will print the part numbers on the report. They'll mark up the parts as much as 100% in addition to their labor charges. Not sure if that's par for these kinds of shops.

Honda Civic EX 1997 coupe with a D16y8 and gnarly cosmetic damage.

Cool. Replacing an axle on that car isn't too bad; the worst part is that some bolts will be nice and stuck on the spindle, but I've never seen a fastener that Sector67 couldn't defeat. You will also need a 32mm socket for the axle nut. Axles are really inexpensive for that car. Around $40 for a full half-shaft assembly, if you can believe it.

A whining noise from the engine compartment shouldn't be hard to locate. I've had numerous Honda D-series engines torn down completely; they're not very complex. Automatic transmission or manual? How many miles on the odometer?

That's spectacularly inexpensive. I was figuring $500+ for getting the CVs done.

The car is a manual with just 120k. While it has received an awful lot of cosmetic damage, it hasn't had a lot of use - only 8k since I bought it over nearly three years.

If you could take a listen to the engine and make a guess, I'd be very appreciative.

Nope. It has got cruise control, though.
