My flechemates and I are bandying about some route planning ideas.   Chief amongst them is the notion that we want to eat often and eat well.  To that end, I wonder if like-minded SIR folks wouldn't mind offering up some of their favorite don't-miss eateries between the OR/WA border and the finish point, to be used as controls.   Extra bonus points for bakeries, excellent sandwich shops, easily-overlooked holes-in-the-wall and places open at oh-dark-thirty.   Locales with excellent latte art also appreciated.  Artisan corndog locales will also be taken under advisement.

Yours in digestive distress,

Susan

The best corndog in western Washington is available at the very top of snoqualamie pass! This might make the beginning of your fleche very cold and also fast!

Since Susan's team is, from what I've heard, starting in Portland, OR, the top of Snoqualamie Pass might be a little bit out of the way...  Then again, what's a few extra KM for the best corndog in Western Washington? ;)

I'd endorse a pass climb for corn dog!

"Willamette Valley" start, not necessarily Portland start.   Still, Snoqualmie might be a tad out of the way as our team has no plans to be overachievers in the mileage or high pass arenas, but rather overeaters.  Is there an award for that? :-)  Though, if LL has her way there will no doubt be a corndog control.

Corn dogs and maybe an Oregon - Washington scratch ticket requirement.

In these parts:

VADER: There is a Mom'nPop cafe, I think it is called the Little Crane, close to the railroad tracks. Don't know about now but I rode one of Marvin Rambo's 600Km brevets years ago and had a terrific breakfast there, I think it was about 2:00pm.

Castle Rock: We ate at a Chinese restaurant in downtown Castle Rock on Fleche's a couple times - Good not great

CENTRALIA: La Tarasca - good central Mexican cuisine.
PaPa Rays Family Cafe - a great American style hash house
Panda Inn - surprisingly good Chinese food
Bill'nBea's - One of the last great mom'npop H-burger stands ala 1962. You'll get a big juicy burger, in a little white paper sack with dark grease stains served by an authentic HS Cheerleader.

OAKVILLE: You (and any other fleche teams) are welcome to control here at Casa Rocky Acres. If you schedule ahead we'll have a good starchy meal for you and a nice French pastry for desert if you want. Really not too much of a stretch for your 22 hour control; We are by the shortest route right at 40Km from the finish. And remember, if you ride the minimum distance (360Km), and you ride 20Km in the last two hours, and you ride 24 hours, you'll get a finish, even if you don't get to the finish point at the end of the 24 hours.

Stock up on Tums.

Although pretty out of the way, if you make the trip to White Salmon
the food and beer at Everybody's Brewing is outstanding. In
Steilacoom, the Topside has some wicked good sweet potato fries. If
you make it into Tacoma, 1111 Peterson has the greatest ruben I've
ever had.

What are the possibilities in Raymond and Elma?

1) Has the finish location been announced?  Route planning might be difficult without that.
2) Raymond is pretty bleak for food.  There is a '50s diner on the highway and a really bad diner in the old town.  There is also a McDonalds.

Elma has a great family style restaurant  called the Rusty Tractor. It does not approach it's mission statement ironically.

Highly recommended.

Plus, if you come through on  Friday or Saturday nights, there will be dirt track car racing at the speedway and plenty of comfort food will be served there.

Raymond has a Dairy Queen about one block from intersection of Routes 6 and 101.  Good for a sugar hit if it you're not too cold.  Next door is a diner type place which looks ok but I have never eaten there.

Elma has The Rusty Tractor.  Had a good breakfast there this year.

Actually the DQ in raymond isn't too bad. They had a "local" menu with fried oysters and chips.

I highly recommend the Highway Diner in Rochester Washington. Pie!
Donald Boothby introduced it to me on a 300k we did in January 2011.
