Communists and Socialists like May Day Too, probably even more than the
libertarians.

Oh, that's a hoot! Marxist Classist Libertarians, yeah, that's the
ticket! Ayn Rand is rolling over in her grave.
Nice anarchist web page though, I especially liked the "getting

If anybody's rolling in their grave over the changing meaning of the
word "libertarian", it's Sebastien Faure and Louise Michel of France,
who coined the word _libertaire_ circa 1895. This being in relation to
left anarchist ideas not at all dissimilar to many ideas and principles
advocated by the IWW.
I'll also point out that left anarchists in the USA were using the term
"libertarian" to refer to themselves at least as early as the
mid-1950s. The Libertarian Party wasn't founded until 1970 or so.

As you wish. Just don't presume that the answer is any more
self-explanitory and to your favor than the "obvious" fact that the
Left stole the meaning of the word "libertarian". :-)
Not sure where you get that from. The modern anarchist movement has
been around since the 1840's. Since then, anarchists have always used
'libertarian' as a synonym for anarchist. When the 'Libertarian Party'
was founded in the 1970's, they were conscious of the fact that they
were appropriating a word that historically was used by anarchists,
those who advocated the toppling of government and capitalism. If
anyone would be rolling over in their graves, it would be someone like
Buenaventura Durruti or Nestor Makhno. Both led anarchist militias
fighting for 'libertarian communism' (which was used interchangeably
with 'anarchism'). (Makhno fought against the White armies as well as
Lenin and Trotsky's Red armies in the Ukraine. Durruti fought against
Franco's fascist army.)
As for the 'Marxist' bit, the anarchist movement split from the
authoritarian communist movement in the 1870's. While anarchists
share the marxists' goal of overthrowing capitalism, anarchists believe
that ends and means are intimately linked, so a free society can't
be achieved by first seizing power either militarily or at the polls.
Due to the nature of government, no government will ever 'wither away',
and a 'dictatorship of the proletariat' can be no different, even in
the unlikely event that it doesn't start out as a dictatorship *over*
the proletariat. So, the anarchist movement has about as much in
common with Marxists as it has with the so-called 'Libertarian Party'.

After years of being fed the 'anarchists are bombthrowing lunatics
trying to create chaos' line by government-run schools and the
corporate media, it makes sense that the idea of anarchists organizing
would be appear a joke. If your knowledge of anarchism came
from anarchists rather than the greatest enemies of anarchism, you'd
know that anarchists have always been for free organization and against
chaos.
If you live near Seattle or Portland I recommend you stop by either
Left Bank Books in Seattle or the 223 Freedom and Mutual Aid Center in
Portland. They would be happy to recommend a good introduction to
anarchism.
